Free Music Notes for Led ZeppelinFree Music Review: Well Done Hit: 5 Stars
I've never been able to really get into Zeppelin the way most people do obsessively, but I found (after borrowing this box set from a friend) just how many good songs they actually have. This box set is 4 discs, each with songs from their albums I, II, III,
IV, Houses of the Holy, Physical Graffiti, In Through the Out Door, and Coda. As well as two previously unreleased songs (or 3). The box set features some great songs (Black Dog, Kashmir, etc.) and may be a little bloated but it's still magnificent. Here's the track list and my thoughts:
Disc 1
1. Whole Lotta Love-5/5-From Led Zeppelin II. This is a really great song.
2. Heartbreaker-5/5-From Led Zeppelin II. This song has an awesome guitar solo by Jimmy Page.
3. Communication Breakdown-5/5-From Led Zeppelin I. And probably the best song on that album.
4. Babe I'm Gonna Leave You-5/5-From Led Zeppelin I. The drumming by John Bonham is fantastic.
5. What Is and What Should Never Be-5/5-From Led Zeppelin II. Very catchy song.
6. Thank You-4/5-It's a good song, but not quite my favorite.
7. I Can't Quit You Baby-5/5-This song is great. According to the box set liner notes it's from "Coda" but I could've sworn it was from Led Zeppelin I.
8. Dazed and Confused-5/5-This is an amazing song. All the playing (or singing) is done exceptionally well on this song.
9. Your Time is Gonna Come-5/5-I'm quite fond of the lyrics. From Led Zeppelin I.
10. Ramble On-5/5-From Led Zeppelin II. This song is inspired by The Lord of the Rings; It's one of my favorite Zeppelin songs.
11. Travelling Riverside Blues-5/5-In this song; Plant says the line "Squeeze my lemon and let the juice run down my leg." That's from another Zeppelin song entitled "The Lemon Song." Jolly good. This song is previously unreleased.
12. Friends-5/5-The guitar isn't show-offish or anything, but is subtely (sic.) cool. From Led Zeppelin III.
13. Celebration Day-5/5-From Led Zeppelin III. Really good; One of the best from III.
14. Hey Hey What Can I Do-5/5-At this point in my life I can relate to these lyrics quite a bit. This song was previously available as a B-Side of "Immigrant Song".
15. White Summer/Black Mountain Side-5/5-Previously unreleased, this song is written solely by Jimmy Page and is essentially a guitar solo, although there's some drums and bass in the song as well.
Disc 2
1. Black Dog-5/5-This is in my Top 5 Favorite Zeppelin songs. This song kicks a$$. From the catchy (and lyrically interesting) vocals. To the beat which is basically the same thing over and over again is great. Obviously, from Led Zeppelin IV.
2. Over the Hills and Far Away-5/5-This is an awesome song. But I like the live version from "How the West Was Won" better. This song is from Houses of the Holy.
3. Immigrant Song-5/5-One of their catchiest songs ever. It's a great song. From "Led Zeppelin III"
4. The Battle of Evermore-5/5-One of my favorite Zeppelin songs. Very cool. From "Led Zeppelin IV"
5. Bron-Y-Aur Stomp-4/5-From "Led Zeppelin III" Sounds very Tolkien-esque.
6. Tangerine-4/5-From "Led Zeppelin III". Kind of weird, good though.
7. Going to California-5/5-I originally didn't like this song that much, but it grew on me. It's pretty damn cool. From "Led Zeppelin IV"
8. Since I've Been Loving You-5/5-The drumming and lyrics are great. From "Led Zeppelin III"
9. D'Yer Mak'er-5/5-Weird lyrics; but this song is pretty cool. From "Houses of the Holy".
10. Gallows Pole-5/5-From Led Zeppelin III. Great lyrics.
11. Custard Pie-5/5-I have no idea what this song is about. But it's very cool, Jimmy Page's guitar sounds great; despite that I can't tell what he's singing Robert Plant sounds very cool. From "Physical Graffiti"
12. Misty Mountain Hop-5/5-I think this song is about "The Lord of the Rings" in some way or another. It's really catchy though. From Led Zeppelin IV.
13. Rock and Roll-5/5-F**king great. This song truly is pure rock and roll.
From Led Zeppelin IV.
14. The Rain Song-5/5-This song has some great keyboard-ing in it. It's a really mellow song, but it works. From "Houses of the Holy".
15. Stairway to Heaven-5/5-By many people considered to be Zeppelin's best song. It's definitley up there, this is an amazing song. From Led Zeppelin IV.
Disc 3
1. Kashmir-5/5-Kick a$$ song. The drumming is just amazing, one of the best musical intros that Zeppelin has done. A great song. From "Physical Graffiti"
2. Trampled Under Foot-5/5-The keyboards (by John Paul Jones) are great on this song, although fairly reminsicnent of Ray Manzarek. From "Physical Graffiti"
3. For Your Life-5/5-Really good. From "Presence".
4. No Quarter-5/5-It has a very haunting mood to it, but it's a good song. From "Houses of the Holy"
5. Dancing Days-5/5-I really like this song. It's cool, catchy, guitar playing is great. From "Houses of the Holy".
6. When the Levee Breaks-5/5-One of their best. From Led Zeppelin IV.
7. Achilles Last Stand-5/5-This song is killer. The drumming is magnificent.
From "Presence".
8. The Song Remains the Same-5/5-This song is great. Jimmy Page plays really good (I guess he always does) on this song. From "Houses of the Holy."
9. Ten Years Gone-5/5-I know I've heard this beat somewhere before, besides this song. The music is perfect. From "Physical Graffiti".
10. In My Time of Dying-5/5-This song is eleven minutes but has a great beat. John Bonham's drumming is incredible and stands out on this song. This is from "Physical Graffiti"
Disc 4
1. In the Evening-5/5-This is a cool song. But Plant's voice sounds a lot different; It's gotten a little bit deeper. From "In Through the Out Door".
2. Candy Store Rock-5/5-Ooo baby baby. One of my favorite Zeppelin songs. From "Presence".
3. The Ocean-5/5-Really good vocals & lyrics. From "Houses of the Holy".
4. Ozone Baby-5/5-Really catchy vocalization. From "Coda".
5. Houses of the Holy-5/5-I don't know why this song isn't on "Houses of the Holy" and I'm not sure what the lyrics have to do with the title really. But this is a great song. From "Physical Graffiti".
6. Wearing and Tearing-5/5-Really hard rockish. From "Coda".
7. Poor Tom-5/5-(No Comment) From "Coda"
8. Nobody's Fault But Mine-5/5-Probably the best song from the album "Presence".
9. Fool in the Rain-5/5-The guitar solo is pretty good. The song is one of the best from "In Through the Out Door".
10. In the Light-5/5-Really cool. The beat rocks and Plant does his moaning thing on the vocal parts. From "Physical Graffiti"
11. The Wanton Song-5/5-(No Comment) From "Physical Graffiti"
12. Moby Dick/Bonzo's Montreux-5/5-Apparently it's a mix of the semi-drum solo and Bonzo's Montreux. Apparently, that's something that John Bonham recorded separately from Zeppelin. Moby Dick is from "Led Zeppelin II".
13. I'm Gonna Crawl-5/5-Some of Plant's most intense vocals. The keyboards are really good too. From "In Through the Out Door."
14. All My Love-5/5-Some of my favorite Zeppelin lyrics. From In Through the Out Door.
A+
Led Zeppelin PosterItem is in mint condition great gift for any zeppelin fan. Here are the original monsters of rock in all their epic, bombastic glory. The Who may have had more decibels (a dubious distinction), but no band took hard rock higher into the stratosphere than the Zep did with their cosmic mixture of deep blues, gothic melodrama, and the supernatural chops of Page, Plant, Bonham, and Jones. For listeners new to the Zep canon, there's no better primer of the band's range and power than this 4 CD box set, compiled and remixed in 1990 by Page himself. All the obvious song choices are here. But even if you've already heard "Black Dog" once too often on the car radio, this set wisely spotlights several overlooked gems, including their ultimate blues lament "I'm Gonna Crawl." It's a blueprint that later generations of head-bangers tragically failed to follow. --Steve Appleford
