Free Music Review: One of those records...

An album that has lent pretty much its entire contents to becoming FM radio staples and seems to figure in pretty much everyone's record collection, "Led Zeppelin IV" (really an untitled record, but this will be an easier reference point) found the band at perhaps their artistic peak, successfully fusing the blues soaked rock of their first two records with the predominant folk influences of the third record. In addition to just some great music, they managed perhaps the most widely played song in music history in "Stairway to Heaven".
In discussing the record, it's probably best to deal with "Stairway" first. Just over 8 minutes, it's pretty much as good as it gets, even if we've all heard it too much to really love it-- gently picked intro fading into 12-string guitars before hitting that explosive solo and powerful, explosive coda. What's not to love? It's a pretty impressive cut.
The rest of the record's awfully good too for that matter, covering a surprising amount of ground-- hitting the blues (propolsive "When the Levee Breaks", call and response opener "Black Dog"), folk (mandolin-driven "The Battle of Evermore", with a second vocal by Sandy Denny), infectious pop ("Misty Mountain Hop"), balladry (the simply lovely "Going to California") and quite a bit more. It's an impressive record start to finish and there's not much not to like on here. It's only fault is that it's been overexposed-- like I said, they're all FM radio staples that we've all heard a million times.
But being overplayed shouldn't effect my rating of the record, and "Led Zeppelin IV" is one of the most successful albums of all time for a reason. It certainly was a bit part of my high school experience 20 years after it came out, I imagine I'm not the only one with this experience.

My title is one of the many ways to describe this masterpiece of an album. Led Zeppelin's fourth album is by far the greatest of all time and will forever hold that title. The four of them were at their best [musically] in every song--John Bonham banged on the drums in true rock 'n' roll fashion, John Paul Jones' bass was great and arguably the best, and Robert Plant's raunchy vocals were the perfect fit for Jimmy Page's legendary guitar playing. The album starts of with the hard-rocking "Black Dog," which is easily one of Zeppelin's most recognizable songs. The second track, "Rock and Roll," stays true to its name and delivers a powerful performance from Zeppelin. "The Battle of Evermore" is a very beautiful song about the band's love for J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings book trilogy; it's worth a listen. Of course none of these songs touch "Stairway to Heaven," which is [in my opinion] Led Zeppelin's best song. The quiet ballad contains excellent guitar playing by Page (whom used a double neck in the recording), beautiful lyrics by Plant, and masterful drumming by Bonham. It is a song to be remembered for the rest of eternity. "Misty Mountain Hop," the raunchy, wild hard-rocker which is much similar to "Rock and Roll," tells a tale of someone who gets in trouble with the police and packs his bags to escape to the "Misty Mountains," which is a reference to the other Tolkien book, The Hobbit. The album also shows Led Zeppelin liked synthesizers, hence the guitar solo for "Four Sticks," which is an awesome song in its entirety. The acoustic ballad "Going to California" also proves the band's talent as masterful performers and songwriters. "When the Levee Breaks," the finisher, is an awesome song with a touch of blues (thanks to Jimmy Page and John Bonham) and much style. Such a unique song that it should be amongst a greatest hits album. Led Zeppelin IV really, truly is the the best album of all time and should be added to everyone's collection, whether or not they like Led Zeppelin. The boys in Led Zeppelin actually could be better than average, but they didn't make up any revolutionary rap dances, so they suck.
Buy D4L's "Down For Life" and Dem Franchize Boyz "On Top of Our Game" instead. The guitar solos would make Jimmy Page cringe in fear, and their thought-provoking lyrics are just amazing.

First of all let me just say nobodys forced to like Zep, but if you don't at least realize they are ONE of the THE most amazing and influencial bands OF ALL TIME! then you don't have one fiber of musical apreciation in your entire body! I absoloutly fall into the category of Zepplin LOVER! Theres just no way to argue with Robert Plants powerful vocals, he struted his stuff onstage like a true rocker should! Jimmy Page is of course one of the greatest guitar players EVER alongside the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, ect. John Bonham is of course one of the most influencial drummers of all time. and Lets not Forget the John Paul Jone's skill on the bass. Plant and Page make up one of the best singer-guitarist duo ever! They are charismatic, energetic and embody the very essence that is ROCK AND ROLL! This album is a MASTERPIECE! theres just absoloutly no way to dissagree with that! So any haters...save your breath and stop making yourselves looking foolish. This album features hits like: Black dog , Rock & Roll, and Stairway to Heaven.
