Free Music Review: Mothership by Led Zeppelin
Hit: 5 Stars

I bought this as a gift....this is what she wanted and she was very happy to get it. The service was great. I think I ordered it on a Monday and received it on Wednesday. Thanks

Free Music Review: Great value for the money. Gets 4 stars for lack of new material.

As long as I've been listening to Rock & Roll music, there's always been Led Zeppelin. Zep is one of those influential bands that's so "heavy" in stature that when they had their first reunion concert in 2007, the list of other bands who came to see it was seriously impressive. However, that's part of my "problem" with Zep. They're so popular (they have their own dedicated channel on XM Radio now, all Zep 24/7), that their songs were so overplayed on the radio, I never had any real desire to own a greatest hits package of theirs. I could hear all this stuff on the radio.

So in 2007, Zep finally decided to release all their music on iTunes. Everything was remastered, and from those sessions came a new 2 CD Greatest Hits package - Mothership. I figured now was the time. So I ended up picking this up. There's not a song on here I didn't know. Admittedly, they're not all as overplayed as "Rock & Roll", "Whole Lotta Love", & "Stairway to Heaven", but there's no surprises here for me. With perhaps one exception. They sound awesome! Zep is from an era when sound was muddled, and you listened to their music stoned, and you didn't care about audio fidelity. Now in the year 2008, folks (even the stoners) aren't into that. You're into clarity, power, and sonic resonance. The Zep tunes have never sounded quite this good to my now 42 year old, too much metal, permanently ringing ears.

The overall selection of tracks is nice, and you get all the hits, and a few second tier songs which is quite nice, too. I am of course hanging onto Zep 4 (how can one get rid of that), and In Through the Out Door (my fav, because it's the least played Zep album). But this will probably be more than enough for me to get my fill of Zep when I want to listen now.

There is a third disc in this package, a DVD as well, which is a sampling of material from the "Led Zeppelin" DVD set released a few years ago. Nice value in there, but I would assume if you owned that box set, you wouldn't care about this. As I've read in other reviews, there is nothing "new" here except perhaps the upgraded (to me anyway) sound. If you have all of Zep's albums already, you really don't need this. But if you don't, or want a sonic upgrade on their most well known stuff, than grab this. It's a pretty darned good price for a 3 disc set.

... seriously. The box sets are a much better value, remastered and organized by Page himself. If you're a purist, remastered copies of the individual albums are available and any single one does Zeppelin better justice than any compilation they will ever release.
Admittedly this is a powerful collection, although an unadventurous one that doesn't include lesser known but arguably more interesting tunes. I suppose if you don't own a single Zeppelin CD and don't plan on owning more than one, you can't go wrong with this as a solid document of their better known moments. But if you have more than a casual interest and want to know why they are considered pioneers of album oriented rock, over time this will end up being supplanted by their entire catalog. Zeppelin's music does that to a person...

Free Music Review: Not so bad
Hit: 4 Stars

I know that there are several negative or near negative reviews about this product but to this person it is great. I know that there are people like me who plunked down cash for the albums, then cassettes, and really did not want to spend any more on CDs. This solves the problem for getting the best of Zepplin without shelling out 100 dollars or more in CDs or downloading low quality MP3s. My only complaint is that when ripped into Itunes and Media Player the volume level was a bit low...so replaying them on a portable player requires adjusting the volume. Other than that it is great.

Free Music Review: Great Zeppelin!

This CD definitely sounds different from the original music, but it sounds wonderful. Keep in mind that everything is the same, it's just re-mastered, you can hear the vocals and bass much clearer now, among other things. Haven't had time to watch the DVD yet.
