Free Music Notes for The Complete Studio RecordingsFree Music Review: All the studio stuff in one box... at long last Hit: 5 Stars
Led Zeppelin were definitely one of the most influential rock bands in the late 60s and during the whole 70s (with few others like Queen, Deep Purple and Aerosmith). With every new album, they were able to create a whole new style. Now all these great studio albums are available in one nice Box Set... with all original artwork and a nice 64-page booklet, plus 4 bonus tracks at the end of their final studio album from 1982, "Coda"... all digitally remastered, so they provide best possible sound quality. You can hear their musical development while listening to the various albums included in the box (9 albums, 10 discs). The only thing one could find fault with the O.S.T. of "The Song Remains The Same" not being included in it. However, the item is called "Complete Studio Recordings", and "TSRTS" is a live album. So for your money, you get a nice box with lots of bonus stuff all around the albums themselves... and you have all the Zeppelin studio work all together in it. If you compare the prices of the box set and of all albums bought seperately, you will see there's no big difference. So the "Complete Studio Recordings" box provides all the mentioned bonuses a collection of seperate album doesn't. Anyway, it's up to anyone. For me, one thing is for sure: Led Zep rocks... and I really love this set!
Free Music Review: Hey Hey What Can I "Say" Hit: 5 Stars
What can I say about the "mighty" Led Zeppelin? They ROCK and made us ROLL!!! I was a Zep fan for more than a quarter century when I bought my first album "Led Zeppelin IV" when I was 16. Since then, I collected all their albums including the hit single "Hey Hey What Can I Do?". Originally Jimmy Page was going to call the band "The New Yardbirds" (after the "Yardbirds", a band he was a member of with the likes of other greats; Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, etc, but if it weren't for Keith Moon who approached Page and said; "Your band's gonna go down like a lead zeppelin!" The rest is history!!! Aside from Page who really showed off his style of guitar playing, he put together a bunch of talented guys, first with John Paul Jones (bass and keyboards) who then recommended a close friend of his John "Bonzo" Bonham who was considered one of the best drummers of our times (both Jones and Bonham were with a previous band). Lastly, Robert Plant became a highly recommended pick for vocals, and yes, he was fantastic with the harmonica. From 1969 until the band's breakup shortly after Bonham's death in 1980, the band grossed millions, and still, after twenty years, remain the most popular band today.
Free Music Review: From an avid and knowledgable Led Zeppelin fan Hit: 5 Stars
Although I do not have this box, I have every Led Zeppelin album ever made besides Coda, which was a piece of compiled junk songs which didn't make it onto any of their previous albums, and Presence, which was a rushed album and only has one good song ("Achilles Last Stand"). Anyway, if you are a Led Zeppelin fan, the disk looks like a must have, being that it has all Led Zeppelin songs ever made, unless you want to go out and spend a fortune buying every Led Zeppelin album. I would get this instead of one of those junk Greatest Hits collections which forget great songs like "Misty Mountain Hop" or "Over the Hills and Far Away." The only possible problem with this box is that it might, and might because I do not have it so I haven't seen, say only Disk 5 instead of Houses of the Holy and so it might not have the original album illustrations which are cool, like on Physical Graffiti. Oh, and speaking of Physical Graffiti (disks 7 and 8), I disagree with the previous reviewer who said that it was "solid." It is a lot better than solid, and is one of the top 3 albums Led Zeppelin released, and to compare it to crap like Coda is rediculous. Anyway, buy the box and not a Greatest Hits compilation.
Free Music Review: Much better than the 2 Box set Hit: 5 Stars
Owning this collection is a much better idea than owning the other 2 box set collection for one simple reason: every Zeppelin album had a certain atmosphere and mood which is totally lost if you just string together random Zeppelin hits. How can you compare the acoustic sound and feel of Zeppelin III with a raucous and wild album like Presence? The band strived for unity and cohesion in their albums and sometimes refused to release any singles until much later than the album's release. To break up their hits into a best of collection seems like a crime. That's why this collection is so great -- all the original art work is preserved along with liner notes, an extra booklet is included with a complete retrospective/overview, the CD's are all remastered from the originals (and boy does that make a difference) and you have all 10 studio albums plus some bonus tracks like Hey Hey which were only released as B sides. There's really no way you could go wrong with this set unless you own all 10 albums. I owned maybe 4 of them, but I'm still glad I have the whole set now. It's very high quality too with nice cases, artwork, and extras. A first class release all the way and a must for Zeppelin collectors.
Free Music Review: Almost all that Led Zeppelin fans need Hit: 5 Stars
If you're looking to replace those old Zeppelin cassettes you have lying around, or you want to complete the Zeppelin CD collection, pick this up. All of their studio work is here. This box will suffice for most any fan of the group. Some will no doubt wish the soundtrack for "The Song Remains The Same" was included. I can live wihtout that, but the BBC sessions are a nice supplement to this box.Included in the package is a booklet loaded with photos and info about the greatest rock band in history. Each disc holder has reprints of all the original packaging that was used when the albums first came out. Very neat piece of history. I don't recall if all of the work was remastered for the box, but I don't even care. I grew up with the raw sound that the old tapes had, so if it is remastered (I don't think it is), it's just a bonus and by no means a neccesity. (Not to me, anyway) Since virtually all of Zep's stuff rules, this is a good buy and an easy way to get all of thier studio work at a reasonable price. I set these up in the cartridges for my changer, and once in a while I break the Led out and visit the rock roots I listened to since I was a teenager. Good stuff man, good stuff.
