Free Music Review: Not the Same
Hit: 4 Stars

I miss Robert saying, "In between last time we came and this time, we managed to get an album out called Houses of the Holy, and . . . " at the beginning of the song, The Song Remains The Same. I realize that the audio was taken from the three MSG shows and the original soundtrack was not a contiguous concert. But, I miss some things.

At least we still have, "New York, goodnight."

Free Music Review: Excellent Sound But
Hit: 4 Stars

Well, gave it a 4 star due to the fact of the song selections the band used which were excellent but as before later "Live collections" were better. Other then that, a great re-release of album which makes the original single disc a smart choice to sell on Amazon or E Bay for a "Buy It Out" price of 10 USD. Check out "Judemac Forever" on the net, search Google, MSN or Yahoo.

Free Music Review: Just OK
Hit: 4 Stars

their seems to be parts of some songs missing it just don't sound the same but worth the money

The Zep remastered with extra tracks. It does not get any better than that!

Free Music Review: What could have been...
Hit: 3 Stars

I got this 2 CD set last week after hearing the tail end of the "new" Whole Lotta Love on the radio. I thought they had actually released a different performance based on the short part I heard. I have owned the vinyl and then the CD versions of TSRTS for over 20 years and I have every note of every solo memorized so it wasn't hard to pick up the vastly expanded and cleaned up sound, as well as the fact there was additional material here. I will agree with other reviews - the sound quality is phenomenal. On a good stereo or with headphones this is the next best thing to being there. The new songs are a total thrill to hear in the mix. Since I've Been Loving You, Heartbreaker, and Black Dog in their entirety are spectacularly better than I remember from the film.

BUT after listening to the entire new CD I am left with a bad taste in my mouth, as if there was a splash of ketchup thrown on my filet mignon. There are extra bars inserted in some songs vs. the original TSRTS. I never knew the songs had been so edited in the first place. This was disappointing in itself, finding the songs I knew and loved so well in the past weren't even "authentic". But answer this - if they saw fit to put some edited parts back in, WHY do we get additional edits removing stuff that WAS in the original release? Listen to the sorry edit at 5:20 in No Quarter and you see what I mean. Originally there was a mellow John Paul Jones keyboard solo with Jimmy taking a turn at rhythm guitar, then segueing into a nice guitar solo. Instead that mellow 1:45 of song is HACKED out and it transitions to arrive rudely at the end of the guitar solo and launch into a more aggressive part immediately. If some of this stuff had been done in the original release, at least it flowed to the point I never noticed it. There are other less flagrant edits throughout the collection, and another obnoxious one in Whole Lotta Love. The whole thing is disappointing to me. While there are elements of a great performance here, I can't get behind it as a work of art. I figured the songs weren't in the same sequence as performed live, and likely had been recorded on different nights. But multiple edits within a LIVE song? WTF!? I want to pretend I was THERE and get to hear what the audience heard! Instead I get a studio fabrication.

On the plus side, the more casual Zep fan will love this. It is likely now the best quality live recordings available of Zeppelin at their rockin' and artistic peak. No one rocks, has rocked, or ever will rock again like these 4 men did. A full scale listen thru of this set will leave you awed, drained, and wishing you had a time machine to go back to 1973. But if you are into authenticity, you will have to stick with the bootlegs until Jimmy comes to his senses and gives us what we really want. I'm for the triple CD set mentioned by another reviewer.
