Free Music Review: Great sound- but not the same album
Hit: 4 Stars

There is no question that the quality of the remaster is profoundly superior to the original. For that reason alone, I highly recommend it.
Add in the bonus tracks and you have really the entire concert from MSG in 1973.
Having said that, it really is a different album than the original soundtrack. There is a sense of revisionist history as Page has chosen not only remix but rework nearly every song. If you know every nuance of the original, as I do, then you will be somewhat surprised when you come across the additions and subtractions. For instance, in Dazed and Confused, there is the unmistakable splicing of parts of the three concerts to make up something that was obviously more pleasing to Page's ears than the original. That bothers me a little bit. Same thing in No Quarter.
Also, it seems that JPJ's bass was pushed a little to the background in some songs where it really stood out it the original, no doubt to make the lead guitar shine a little more. I think that Jimmy may have been massaging his ego a bit in the remix. But he is the master and knows how to market his product. Some fans may really dig the differences; I was hoping to hear a better sounding version of the tracks that I have come to know and love so well, but what I got was really a different album altogether. However, I know it will grow on me.

Free Music Review: Jimmy brutally edited killer versions !
Hit: 4 Stars

Yes sir, the great guitar master and studio wizard whipped us rough, editing the concert badly. Some of the first version stuff is, now compared, a lot better, but was butchered out by Jimmy and his whiz protools engineer.

Keep well your old TRRS cd. Our beloved Page edited or changed several songs that are way better than the ones he put instead. His Acapulco Golden tea must have been too strong.,,

The best and non edited versions of the older cd are -Celebration Day, The Song Remains The Same. Moby Dick, Whole Lotta Love and No Quarter wich features THE rock guitar solo, an incredibly tasteful and well constructed killer. I would place IT in between Page's best 3 alltime solos... LISTEN TO it and YOU WILL FALL ON YOUR KNEES, CRYING IN JOY AGAIN. The new version is inhumanly edited out,,, THE CRESCENDO AND OTHER VITAL SEGMENTS are gone...
The other mentioned tracks have incredible bits that were inexplicably substracted,
.
Of course the remastered sound is way better, so just enjoy both cd`s like different concerts, THE Extra tracks are very good. The packaging is beautiful
but the design is nasty for the cd;s which get damaged in a very tight space.

Free Music Review: Led Zep live is always worth your time
Hit: 4 Stars

Yes, they edited some of the songs, not always for the better. Yes, if you are a purist who cannot believe they would mess with the original masters of this album, you'll be disappointed.

But here's the good stuff: it sounds incredible, there are a lot of previously unreleased songs here, and any live Zeppelin is better than no live Zeppelin! I do think How the West Was Won was overall a better release, but turn this one up loud on your stereo, and you really won't care (OK, I really don't care...not sure about you!)

The version of the Rain Song is nearly perfect. Page's guitar work on the song just makes my jaw drop. The Ocean has some great rhythm work from Bonham and Jones. Dazed and Confused is always a show-stopper, and Black Dog is quite good. Yes, there are a few "so-so" versions of the songs on here, but plenty to recommend. And as I said, the louder I turn it up on my stereo, the less I seem to care!!! I really liked the packaging on the CD (including an essay from the great Cameron Crowe) and I feel like I got my money's worth here.

Free Music Review: THE SONG DOES NOT REMAIN THE SAME
Hit: 4 Stars

WELL DEVOTED LED ZEPPELIN FANS, AS A JIMMY PAGE MANIA NUT SINCE 1969, I AM SOMEWHAT DISAPPOINTED WITH THE REISSUE. DO NOT GET ME WRONG. IT IS ESSENTIAL TO HAVE THE BONUS TRACKS WHICH WE HAVE MISSED FROM THE MOVIE FOR OVER 20 YEARS. "SINCE I'VE BEEN LOVING YOU" IS GREAT. THE VERSION IN THE REISSUE IS EXACTLY LIKE THE ONE IN THE MOVIE. FOR ME JIMMY PAGE IS UNBELIEVABLE. EVERY NOTE HE HITS MOVES MY GUT. DESPITE THE FACT THAT SOME FELLOW GUITARISTS SAY THAT HE IS SLOPPY. HE HAS AND WILL REMAIN MY FAVORITE LEAD GUITARIST OF ALL TIME. THE PROBLEM FOR ME IS THIS. "NO QUARTER" IS NOT THE VERSION FROM THE ORIGINAL DISK! IT IS LAME! JIMMY'S SOLO IS NO WHERE NEAR AS EXCITING AS IN THE ORIGINAL. "WHOLE LOTTA LOVE" SEEMS TO BE EDITED OR CUT UP. SO, WHAT DOES THIS ALL MEAN? IT MEANS THAT IF YOU LOVE LED ZEPPELIN, IT IS IMPERATIVE AND ESSENTIAL TO HAVE THE OLD SOUND TRACK VERSION AS WELL AS THE NEW VERSION. ESPECIALLY, BEFORE THE OLD VERSION IS OUT OF PRINT. LED ZEPPELIN RULES!

Free Music Review: Improved but still flawed
Hit: 4 Stars

The original release had some great highs and great lows. Tracks like No Quarter, Dazed and Confused, and Moby Dick have a "you had to be there" kind of appeal to them. The shorter tracks were much more listenable and to this day I prefer these live versions of Stairway to Heaven and Whole Lotta Love. The new tracks are fantastic. Finally, the Celebration Day/Black Dog tandem that works so well in the film is preserved on CD. The sound is, of course, greatly improved. Without the extra tracks the CD is three stars. I give it four stars here because of the aforementioned tracks.

When I saw LZ perform in '77, No Quarter and Page's theramin solo included laser lights that enhanced the performance and at least gave you something to look at while Jonesy noodled away on the organ and Pagey fooled around with the theremin. Without those visuals, just listening to them isn't the same.
