Free Music Notes for Lost & FoundFree Music Review: Simply Amazing Hit: 5 StarsMy review title basically says it all. Also, I recently watched "The Bridge" on AOL Black Voices with her and Chaka Khan and was just blown away. This girl is the truth. What a voice and such a wonderful presence. Earlier this summer, she was on the radio here in NYC and when she sung acapella, I was like "yeah, she's about the business" :). Unfortunately, I missed her performance that evening at South Street Seaport but her song "Alright" stays in rotation on the radio and I knew I had to get her CD. I just purchased it Monday (11/5) that just passed and I am so glad that I did. Simply amazing.
Free Music Review: A Good Safe major League Debut Hit: 2 StarsFirst off, respect where respect is. The music man, otherwise known as Kayode hyped me to this, so much props to you Bro. As most know Ledisi has been in the game for a minute with two previous Cds Soul Singer and the lavish entitled: Feeling Orange But Sometimes Blue: The Jazz Singer Limited Edition] ]
I think this is a good safe major league debut. That whilst it isn't gonna hit the ball out of the park, hopefully will, with decent sales, allow her develop her craft on her next project.
The first thing that hits you is here is a lady that can sing. I mean really sing, and doesn't over sing to prove the point (often less is more, as some singers could/should learn) But what also comes over in many of the songs on offer is a sameness. Songs like' You & Me' 'Joy' 'Best friend' 'Today' & 'Get to Know You', whilst decent songs in themselves, have been done before and offer us nothing new.
There are some good moments on here 'I tried' is a lively number that works well and is among my favorites on this joint, as is 'Someday'. I also love.
At the moment I'm in the process of listening to her Soul Singer CD that my Brother lend me. Now this sounds more of the kind of thing that could have set her apart from her comptempories. Hopfully this will get a re-release because the world needs to hear this.
On reflection( thanks Oshun) I think 2 stars is a little mean, so I'd give this 3 instead (If Amazon would let me change it!)
Free Music Review: LOVE AT 1ST SIGHT! Hit: 5 StarsUpon listening to this the first time, I knew my purchase of it was money well spent. This girl can SANG! I don't know who's responsible for bringing back "grown folks music" but I'm glad they did. Ledisi does not disappoint.
Free Music Review: Not many singers like her around Hit: 4 StarsLedisi - Lost and Found (Verve, 2007)
Ledisi Young has been around the soul underground for sometimes, stealing the show on any song she guested on. While I agree that this album isn't as powerful as Soulsinger, I think that her record label wanted to "dumb down" her performance a bit in order to gain more record sales. She has the voice that can make your goosebumps get goosebumps but sometimes you need to ease it down a little to be more marketable. And yeah, it bites, but that's the way the music biz is sometimes.
But back to the album, "Think of You" is my favorite song as well as the interlude duet with Rahsaan Patterson which should have been a whole song. I like "Someday" also when she thanks her parents (even her molesting father who she sang about in 2001's "Papa Loved to Love Me"!) for being there for her. I hope that Ledisi finally gets the props she deserves with this album. -EJR
Free Music Review: Lost and DEFINITELY Found a diamond in the ruff!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Ok I been hearing a lot about Ledisi over the past few years. I actually had an opportunity to see her perform a few years back at the Neo Soul Explosion concert series in Chicago but was unable to attend. I heard her version of "Luther Vandross "My Sensitivity" and thought she did a decent version of the song. So I was definitely looking forward to checking her out with her latest release.
I was PLEASANTLY surprised. Ledisi vocals are unbelievable. Her range is great and she SCATS!!! How rare to find a young female who does that nowadays with all the "manufactured" artist that gets airplay. It is a shame that she hasn't received more of notariety. She is definitely a songstress. The CD is great from beginning to end..... I am glad that she is on a major label now but I hope they do a BETTER job promoting it.
