Free Music Notes for Lost & FoundFree Music Review: (4.5 Stars) I Was Lost....But Now I'm Found! Hit: 5 Stars
Being an underground artist has its ups and downs. The downs are more obvious, with limited record sales, less mainstream promotion, and little to no radio or video airplay. But then there are the ups of having a small room full of people that love and appreciate your work for what it is. There's also the constant hustle and eagerness to eventually get to the mountain top. But the single biggest thing that small time artists realize over time is that the music industry itself is based on timing and luck. For Ledisi, her time has arrived after many years of struggling to get her music to the masses. With the arrival of her new album, there's good reason why Ledisi was named as one of the' Top 10 Faces To Watch in 2007' by Billboard Magazine. On her harmonious Verve Forecast debut Lost and Found, Ledisi guides you on a musical voyage into her world that you are more than happy to venture into. Her lead single "Alright" showcases her wide vocal range alongside the meaningful lyrics she delivers at the same time. "Joy" explores the idea of allowing another person into their soul and bringing them the happiness they deserve to have. "Think Of You" is an impassioned testimony of love for one's significant other. Other knockout tracks include the lighthearted song "Get To Know You," the adoring mind-set of "In The Morning," the commanding lyrics of "The One," and the feeling of hopefulness on "Someday." Another notable track has to be the duet with Rahsaan Patterson for "We Are One," a seductive interlude that certainly deserves to be a full-length track. Lost and Found promises to be the crown jewel in Ledisi's budding singing career.
Free Music Review: She will turn you Upside Down... Hit: 5 Stars
Ledisi Anibade Young (known professionally by the moniker Ledisi) is up for 2 Grammys this Sunday; best newcomer, and best R&B album. "Lost and found" is her major label debut (she'd released 2 CDs independently previously) and while fans of those (jazzier) CDs have stated that this isn't quite up to those, it's still a very good CD, far superior to most R&B out today. The mood is mellow and jazzy (some scatting, and jazz piano) with lovely harmonies.
The CD opens with crowd sounds and a soulful intro "Been here", replete with James Brown style yelps. "Joy" is a groovy mid tempo song, "You and me" with its scratchy bass line wouldn't sound out of place on a D'Angelo CD, and scat sprinkled "Best friend" is also nice. More songs along these lines are "Alright", "Get to know you" (with a gently pulsing bass line), the quiet storm feel of "In the morning", the melodramatic piano title track (lovely violin flourishes, and an impassioned vocal delivery), the all too brief "we are one" (with Rahsaan Patterson), and "Someday".
Upping the tempo a wee bit are the piano laced "Think of you" (with scratches, awesome song!), "Today" (with funky horns), "Upside down" (great percussion, some scatting, groovy bass line; another favourite of mine), the more sparse "I tried", and the acoustic "The one" (breezy harmonies). Closing the CD is an outro "Been here", which is a continuation of the intro, with her thanking us for coming (to the show, I guess). The pleasure is all ours Ledisi.
This CD reminds me of "I am" by Chrisette Michele; groovy jazzy soul with a live sound, performed by a superb vocalist.
Free Music Review: "Attention America, A Fire Is Blazing That Can't , And Shouldn't Be Put Out!" Hit: 5 Stars
What if you needed oxygen, and there was one CD that could give it to you? That is how I describe Ledisi's latest venture on "Lost & Found". It is truly on fire! Get this CD with urgency right away, and not bootleg either so this sista' can get her royalties and be around to save us. Don't allow yourself to miss out on one of the best albums of the year. "I Try", "In The Morning", "Alright", and "Lost And Found", are some of my favorite cuts from this album. I saw her perform at The Temple Bar, a platform arena for established and up-and-coming artists, in Los Angeles, CA. This furthered my mesmerization with this balm of soulful delight. If I tell you that you can listen to this CD(in my opinion a creation of art)from start to finish. She has done it once again. I am 28 years old and have resorted to listening to CD's of the 80's and 90's just to get the fulfillment that I desire from soul music. Listening to everyone from The Brand New Heavies, to Will Downing, to Bilal, to Maxwell, to LaToya London just to get a buzz. Ledisi brings it y'all. Look for her on tour soon hopefully in a city near you. But until then, look for her performance on TV One's new show, "Baisden After Dark", with Michael Baisden premiering in October 2007 to calm our senses until then. Ledisi, keep on doing your thang. We get it girl, we get it!
Free Music Review: 'WHAT!' can one say other than it's about darn time a major label took notice! Hit: 5 Stars
I'm so happy for girlfriend! I know I should talk about the music on this CD but all I can say first is listen to her first two albums (if you can find them) and you all we be saying "WHAT?!" Ledisi is a true jazz vocalist who happened to spin a TIGHT adult R&B album with this LOST & FOUND cd. Why haven't we heard of her before? Because she's been perfecting her chops (for years on the West Coast) to deliver righteously on THIS album. The funky gems for me are YOU AND ME, TODAY, UPSIDE DOWN. I'm not even sure what they are playing on the radio but I'd love to hear JOY on an adult R&B format. It's seductive, percussive and full of raw emotion. But one of the more provocative songs BEST FRIEND I think would be a better choice. Who CAN'T relate to that song? And even if there is a soul who didn't have that personal experience of liking someone secretly, they know of someone who has. If I had to threw any labels on her for first time listeners, I'd threw the classy cloak of Anita Baker on her shoulders but Lesdisi stands tall and firm in funky thigh-high eel skin boots of a Chaka Khan. With all the vocal talent and production skills, Ledisi has the all the trappings to stand out from the crowded room of today's R&B divas.
Free Music Review: A long time coming Hit: 5 Stars
This CD is a long time coming. Ledisi has been a huge underground hit for years, known for her unparalleled live shows - fans need to see her live, especially in a club setting, to truly understand how great they are. "Soulsinger" was a very nice CD that gave us a taste of what she can do, but this one is a gem.
The first single, "Alright", would be beautiful as an instrumental. The song is about persevering through hard times, and the lyrics tell the story beautifully to go with the pace of the song. "Joy" likewise has wonderful lyrics and might be the best song on here, although there's also good competition for that "Get to Know You", "In the Morning", the title cut and "Someday".
But that's not all. "You And Me", "Today", the very up-tempo "I Tried" and "The One" are all very good songs.
And while we all love to enjoy the music itself, these songs make you think as you listen closely to the lyrics, because they all have an idea behind them.
At long last, the whole world gets a chance to find out how great she is. She won't be underground much longer.
