Free Music Review: Phenomenal

It's been a long time since Sixpence None the Richer stormed pop & adult contemporary radio with catchy and easy tunes that hearken to an easier era in music. I daresay that Leigh Nash's voice is as bubbly as it once was, but is this a bad thing? Absolutely not. She may not be asking us to kiss her any longer, but her message isn't that far changed that we can't pick up where they left off.
This album is one of the most beautiful pieces of melodramatic piano pop balladry I have heard in a while. I think the last album I heard that was this good, in this vein, was Aslyn's Lemon Love.

As with many albums, I received this one free. At the time I just couldn't justify spending money on it. The snippets I had heard off of iTunes just weren't enough for me. The copy I received for free, though, cemented that I would have been quite willing to shell out $16 (or maybe a tad more) to acquire this piece of perfection.
The album is hard to describe. I mean, I could break it down into "piano, then vocals, then soft yet insistent percussion accompanied by tension in the piano and vocals" etc, etc. But does that really describe how this album makes me feel? Perhaps I should try. "Along the Wall" makes me feel like it should be early Autumn, perhaps late in the day, the sun hanging low in the sky. I'm outside walking, wearing a light jacket, my hands in my pockets, my iPod playing into my ears and the world carrying on as normal. I'm smiling to myself because the beauty of it all is far too much to focus on, so I just accept it as what it is. At that moment, things are perfect.
Actually, that's nearly a fair description of how the entire album makes me feel. It warms me in ways most music doesn't. It has soft curves where most music today has jagged edges. It allows me in where others push me out.
Two standout tracks in particular (outside of the previously mentioned "Along the Wall") are "Ocean Size Love" and "Between the Lines". The former is a pensive, hyperbolic testament to love unbidden, love everlasting, love all-encompassing. The latter is a cute song which has Ms. Nash asking, "Between the lines, can you read me? Between the lines, that's where I'll be. Between "Hello" and "I would give you the moon". Between "I love you" and "I, I'll see you soon." Heartfelt, pitch perfect.
Honestly, after all this poetry I've just written for you, you better buy this album. And don't waste your time with iTunes. Buy the ACTUAL cd.
