Free Music Review: A Hot Air Balloon Trip Over Gentle Scenery

This isn?t the type of electric CD that you would hear in a club. The sound is more of the chill out genre, with a touch of piano, acoustic guitar, and some interesting lyrics. What makes this album, and group in general different is the feeling their music projects. Most chill albums are good for a cold night in front of a fire. They usually leave you in a mellow, down and out mood. Lemon Jelly?s album leaves you smiling and even laughing at the occasional odd lyric added in.

While no track listing (or anything period, even the groups name) can be found on the album, there are eight standout tracks. The first song "Element," gently drifts in with a few soft piano keys. A somewhat deeper voice then pronounces "Ash,?.Metal.." and I can?t help but smile. The voice isn?t scary, instead it is rather comforting to hear. The second track "Space walk," uses voice samples from the Apollo 11 Space Walk with a gentle acoustic guitar. The song describes the sun rising over the horizon in space. The word "Beautiful" can often be heard in the background. The third song "Ramblin Man" comes in next. No where near an Alman Brothers cover, the voice from the first song comes on to speak over the flowing music of this song. The speaker rambles over the names of many places as the listener gains the feeling of traveling across many places. The forth song changes the pace of the album a little. The closest dancing song on the album, "Return To Patagonia" is a jazzy number that would fit into a late night club. I find the fifth song "Nice Weather For Ducks" great to listen and laughingly humorous at the same time. The quick drum beat mixed with acoustic guitar and a background symphony set the scene for this song. The lyric sample is from a childhood nursery rhyme with the lyrics "All the ducks are swimming in the water.. fa la la la la," if that isn?t greatly humorous to hear halfway into falling asleep, I don?t know what is. The song finishes with an agamalation of mixed instruments and sound. From maracas, to an orchestra, to an electric guitar, and even trumpets, the song finishes leaving you in a great mood to keep listening. The mood of the sixth song is set by a scratchy record and thunder. "Experiment No. 6" The mood of this song is a little darker, but it fits the title perfectly. The sampled speaker is a scientist in the process of a mysterious experiment. A jazzy orchestra keep the background of the song interesting. As the experiment heats up, a chanting chorus is added to the background and the orchestra speeds up. Like the song, the experiment ends abruptly with the sound of a blank pulse meter. Song seven, "Closer" is back to the familiar sound of the album. An acoustic guitar welcomes light piano keys and whispered lyrics. The word "Closer" slowly gets louder, echoing with the acoustic guitar. The song gently flows out into the eight with some "OooOooOs" welcoming you in. The entry to "The Curse Of Ka'zar" reminds me of reaching a secret or newly discovered land. Some jazzy drumming and bass guitar play as the song flows along. It makes you want to bounce your head side to side. A jazzy guitar riff kicks in as the vocal "Ooos" come back with a sudden entrance of an orchestra. However, it quickly sends you back to an acoustic guitar as the land of the song becomes more familiar. The song begins to end as trumpet bursts are added in. You get the feeling that you are being welcomed into this strange land, or are entering a king?s gate. As the music begins to fade, you are left with the dream "OoOos," and then the CD ends. An almost perfect sixty minutes of music.

If you?re still a little unsure of Lemon Jelly?s sound, I highly recamend you test out the non-album MP3 named "The Staunton Lick" that CDNow offers. This song is a great example of their work and will give you the general feeling of satisfaction that Lost Horizons leaves you with.
