Free Music Review: LENNY'S BEST ALBUM TO DATE...

"5" begins on a funky,optimistic note with "Live".Armed with a warm,postive message and januty horns."Live" is reminiscent of
"Let Love Rule" and "Always On The Run".A standout.

Next up is the P Funk/Prince inspired "Supersoulfighter".
Not bad.Features stirring vocals from now R&B star Angie Stone
(Fact:Angie auditioned as a saxophone player in Lenny's band)
and a P-Funk inspired funk setting,"Supersoulfighter" is pure fun funk.

"I Belong To You" is another highlight.It's very contempary R&B.
Radio-ready.I'm suprised this didn't get play on R&B radio....

But then Lenny hits an all-time low with a little ditty named
"Black Velveteen".This has to be one of the most ghastly songs
I've ever had to listen to! This song is AWFUL!! Sounding like
a ultra-cheesy Flock Of Seagulls outtake,it's hard to listen to
"Black Velveteen" without covering up your ears and crawling in
a corner!! This is the only major misstep on "5" and the remaining of the album makes up for it.

The moody,sparse "If You Can't No"("5"'s first single in the U.S)
is a high-point.As is the touching "Thinking Of You".A heartfelt,
sincere dedication to Lenny's late mother,Roxie Roker(Helen
Willis on the "Jeffersons")."Thinking" is true soul.
Again,I'm surprised that R&B radio didn't play this song(it was released as a single too).

From the gourgeous "Thinking" we dip into the steepy "Take Time".
I like this song.It has a nice message and a elusive feel.
And features some of Lenny's most excited vocals.Yet again,why R&B radio didn't pick up on it eludes me("5" is a very soulful album).

"Fly Away" is pleasant yet generic and tepid in it's intended "take me higher" message.It became a huge hit mainly because it was extremely radio-friendly.BUT we go into the more meatier "It's Your Life"-I LOVE THIS SONG!!! "Life" is a '70s
funk inspired number with an incredible hook and amused good feeling.You can't hear this song without wanting to dance.I'm suprised this wasn't released as a single."It's Your Life" is easily one of "5"'s high-points.

"Straight Cold Player" sounds like music you'd hear in the background of some cheesy MTV show.Well-intended but tepid and undercooked.NEXT.

"Little Girl's Eyes",a seven minute ode to Lenny's 13-year old daughter Zoe,is lush and again,very sincere.Beautiful lyrics and a nice electro-setting that features a haunting sythnizer solo.
"Little Girl's Eyes" is yet another standout.

From the fun "You're My Flavor"("All 32 baby"-Love that line!!)
to the meaningful finale "Can't We Find A Reason?" along with the two bonus tracks that were added on when "5" was reissued in
1999:the funky remake of the Guess Who's "American Woman"(is this song made for a fashion runway or a car commerical,or what?)
and "Without You"-a decent leftover,leave "5" on a very high note.

This has to Lenny Kravitz' best album.It's really funky.Soulful.
Appealing.And features strong songwriting(anybody who knows Lenny knows that our boy can sink low in the lyrics department!).
"5" is an exellecent album.
