Free Music Notes for BaptismFree Music Review: His best so far Hit: 5 Stars
"5" has so far been my favourite. Having listened to "Baptism" I?ll have to think again.
The cover is a little over the top: too much blood-red leading your thoughts to the Christian notion of salvation and spiritual rebirth by sacrifice ? suitable, admittedly, for this album, but way too much for my taste. An invasion of privacy, somehow. His and mine.
Craig Ross fans will be happy to know he?s still around, even co-writing some of the music. I just wish he?d be featured more prominently. He is an incredibly gifted musician and more use should be made of his talent. Why not leave guitar solos to him? It?s a real treat experiencing this artist in life performances.
Strangely, I haven?t been able to find a single track I didn?t enjoy. And the more I listen, the better do I appreciate just how good this music is ? the work of a man matured both as an artist and a person. Many lyrics deal with this process of maturing and finding your unique place in God?s creation. Just listen to this line from ?Destiny?: No one can live for me/
No one can see the things I see/ I walk this road/ No one can tell me how to be.
I love ?Storm?; Jay-Z really nailed this one: Get your umbrella/ It?s raining macs and broads/ All grace to God. He knew what he was doing!
?Sistamamalover? is another great song. The beat is catching, it?s full of good humour, it gets into your bloodstream ? and they must have had great fun recording it (I mean: The Uncle Clappers??).
?Minister of Rock?n Roll? and ?Where are We Runnin??? are great tracks that should be popular with a wide audience. ?Minister of Rock?n Roll? must be something of a personal anthem to Lenny Kravitz.
The song I enjoyed the most is ?Calling All Angels?. I almost didn?t notice it the first few times I listened to the album because it is so low-key and unassuming. Actually, inspired would be a more accurate description. It must have been written all in one flow, a song that was waiting to come forward. I was deeply moved by it.
So, buy the album. You won?t regret it. As the man himself says: I can bless it so it don?t get old!
Free Music Review: Batism. The album that brings Lenny back Hit: 5 Stars
I could easily just write the word "Awesome" and explain this cd thoroughly, but it deserves way more praise than that. I must say that Baptism is the album where Lenny comes back, and back with a vengance!!!! Every single song on this album really felt like he was singing from his heart, like the lyrics had meaning rather than just sounding good. Not only were the lyrics good, but also the music is just as good if not better! If every song were an instrumental, I'd enjoy it just as much. Although I am a little saddened that his former drummer Cindy Blackman is no longer part of his band, I must say the new band (including the back up singers) are great. The music was put together, written, aranged and performed greatly. The ballads were simple, but beautiful. Perhaps it is the simplicity, which made it so great for his ballad "Calling all Angels" track 4. It was pure and he wasn't trying so hard...it just came out simply sounding great. I also thought "Baptized" track 8 was a ballad that was written with feeling and soul.
Now on to my favorite part of this album.... the faster, more upbeat, ROCK n' ROLL songs!!! Tracks like "Lady", "Flash", "Where are we Runnin'" and "I Don't Want to be a Star" made me want to dance, move, tap my feet and slap the steering wheel while listening and driving! These were songs that truly brought us back to the true Lenny. Not so much cookie cutter...the Lenny we all love and going from tracks like "Minister of Rock n' Roll" to "Storm", really showed that diverse side of Lenny. He can easily go from Rock n' roll to a more r&b, hip-hop song; something only Lenny can do so graciously. The only negative thing in my opinion is that for "Storm", it would've been better without JayZ. I like JayZ and all but I really didn't see the need for him in this song.
Overall, this album is worth buying whether you are a Lenny fan or just a fan of good music.
Free Music Review: Lenny has taken a different direction Hit: 5 Stars
I received Baptism as a Christmas present and before I listened to it, I didn't know quite what to expect. I already owned the greatest hits and 5 and I enjoyed listening to them a lot. Since then, I always saw Lenny Kravitz as one of my favorite musicians.
Since I haven't heard "Lenny" yet, I pretty much thought Lenny's music would be the same as it's always been. But after listening to the first track, Minister Of Rock and Roll, I knew that Lenny had definitly taken a new direction with his music. This song sounded louder and more like heavy metal. This is not the same as I heard from the greatest hits. Those songs were much softer. Of course, Lenny does come back with softer songs like on "Calling All Angels" but I still think this album has a diiferent mood to it. The only song that I would skip is Destiny. This song basically has an acoustic guitar with Lenny singing very softly. The problem is that when Lenny sings softer, he has a diiferent sound in his voice and it can get annoying at times. That was my main complaint with that song. My favorites would be: Minister Of Rock and Roll, Lady, Calling All Angels, California and Where Are We Runnin'. The rest are good but not "great".
A lot of people complained about this album, saying that Lenny Kravitz was not a good songwriter. I really don't see what everyone is complaining about. Okay so maybe Lenny is not the best songwriter in the world but he can still write some pretty good songs that are worth listening to. I gave the album 5 stars because I think it is an enjoyable album.
If you are familiar with Lenny Kravitz, than I think this album is worth a try.
Free Music Review: A Rock Legend In the Making Hit: 5 Stars
James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Jackson 5, Prince.....Lenny Kravitz
---List sound familiar?
"Baptism", released in 2004, is yet another great Lenny Kravitz album. He proves how great of a musician he is. He writes, produces, and arranges all his own songs. More amazing is that he also plays most of his own instruments throughout the album. This creates a unique rock sound that adds elements of R&B, funk, and pop. This album proves that his style has evolved through the years from flower power spirit on "Let Love Rule" (1989) to now.
"Baptism" experiments with different sound qualities, most of which revisit his previous album "Lenny" (2001). Much of it offers a live performance affect. He adds more emphasis to the rock & roll piano style to a lot of his songs, namely on "California". This gives the album more of an archive theme while revisiting a time of rock music that many people miss. Much of his new style adds more of a dancy reaction than previously known. Though the sound is slightly more minimal and less retro than before, he never loses the immense quality. Meanwhile, he stays true to his signature rock style. His lyrics remain meaningful, yet catchy throughout the album. His vocal performances express them beautifully ("Baptized") or intensely ("Minister of Rock & Roll"), whichever fits the song.
Such musical quality makes "Baptism" worth listening. This is sure to please Lenny Kravitz and rock music fans. Also, catch his performance of "Lady" on the new Gap commercials. And expect "Where Are We Rinning" to receive a 2004 Grammy nomination for Best Male Rock Performance.
Free Music Review: Music Hit: 5 Stars
I just received the album as an early Christmas gift...and I love it.I notice a lot of critics and music buyers consider this a failing success, but if you look at the whole spectre of music right now, (the flourishing of indepent labels), everyone...rockers included...are trying to find something new. Thanks to many of today's artist...beleive it or not, what we call music...in 20 years will be called classic-alt. Because of the breaking of musical barriers. C'mon, who would have ever thought of Country Superstar Tim McGraw and Hip-Hop Superstar Nelly collaborating. Music is hot right now,...who knows when the next band/group/artist that's gonna change music like Nirvana, Dylan, The Beatles, and Public Enemy. It may be a someone already out,...Maroon 5, Tricky, Outkast, Kanye, Lenny. I gave the brother a 5 for simply be original and trying to make an album of cool songs, instead of cool songs on an album.
If your like me and a fan of MUSIC...or just like Lenny Kravitz get the album, and make-up your own mind rather or not it floats your boat.
