Free Music Review: "Rock And Roll Is Dead"?!?!?!?!?!?!
Hit: 4 Stars

Yeah....somehow that title (the first single off "Circus")seems more than a little out of place! Whatever the intention may have been, rock and roll is definitely NOT suffering on this album!

"Circus" is a very raw-sounding rock album....the first half is mainly more straight ahead rock...."Beyond the 7th Sky" is a slow, driving rock song that hits you and won't let go...."Rock And Roll Is Dead" is full of energy...."Magdalene" is a steady rocker (like "Are You Gonna Go My Way" off the previous album" only not so over-the-top) that really lifts you, and will have you singing along before you even know what you're singing!

The rest of the album is much darker...."Thin Ice" "Don't Go And Put A Bullet In Your Head" and the title track are all slow and darkly beautiful songs.....

BUT -- if you don't own anything by Lenny Kravitz, and you wanna see what he's all about, DO NOT start with this album....I love this cd -- it's probably my favorite of all of his -- but it's not a standard Lenny Kravitz album....

Picking up "Are You Gonna Go My Way?" or "5" or even the new greatest hits disc would be a much better place to start.....

If you're already a fan and you don't own this, you have to! While it's still largely a positive album, much more so than a lot of the music that was popular when it came out, "Circus" is a real moodswing for Lenny....

Once you get past that, it's still very much the powerful music he has always put out, and continues to put out.

Free Music Review: 4 stars for the album. 5 stars for "The Resurrection"
Hit: 4 Stars

I personally love this album. It, like so many others have said, is very different than Kravitz' other music. It is very dark and gloomy, with the exception of a few songs. Lenny really dug down deep into his religious side on this one. All that not to say that the sad, gloomy songs are bad. They are actually really good for the most part. Also, I believe that this album has the best song Lenny ever wrote; the extremely Zeppelin-esque "The Resurrection." This song alone is almost worth the price of the cd.
In short, if you are looking for the poppy, radio-friendly sound that you hear on Kravitz' other albums, you won't find much of that on this inconsistent album. And remember, that inconsistency isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Free Music Review: unique and different
Hit: 4 Stars

the best songs of this great album are: "rock and roll is dead",(an excellent song to start this record)"circus"(great voice, great lyrics, great music),"can't get you off of my mind"(go on you can cry),"magdalene"(for those girls who dream to be a tv star check this out first),"in my life today"(smooth ,excellent track) "the resurection"(very religious song). it is clear that lenny is one of the best rock players in the entire world!!!! something very funny about lenny"s records is that you always like about 8 or 9 tracks of them, not only one or two like a lot of records.....simply the best.

Free Music Review: Solid "Lenny".
Hit: 4 Stars

This may be one of his lesser known albums, but that doesn't mean it's a lesser album. Lyrically it is a bit deep, and maybe dark, but musically it rocks like you would expect it to. Rockers and ballads, they're all here of course. Included are the hits "Rock & Roll Is Dead" and "Can't Get You Off My Mind", but "Beyond The 7th Sky", "Magdalene", and "Don't Go Put A Bullet In Your Head" are good too. I also really like "In My Life Today". So even though this album got stuck between two more popular releases of his, fans shouldn't pass it up. Newbies can check out the "Greatest Hits".

Free Music Review: not his best but not bad
Hit: 4 Stars

the mood is darker here than most of his work. he has given interviews that this was a down time for him and his creativity suffered. it has its moments such as the title track. "rock and roll is dead" sounds like a retread of "are you gonna go my way" with a more pessimistic tone. lenny is taking himself too seriously. fans should buy this but casual listeners can skip it.
