Free Music Notes for It Is Time For A Love RevolutionFree Music Review: Let Love Rule Hit: 4 Stars
Critics have basically dismissed Kravitz over the years as a recycler of late 60's and early 70's rock and roll. It's true that Kravitz's music has elements of Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, James Brown, Sly And The Family Stone, but he also has some Prince, Little Richard, Living Colour and even Terence Trent D'Arby as well as some Black Crowes. I've like Kravitz from the beginning, and though he is not my favorite artist, I have all eight of his albums, each of which have their own merits.
That said, "It Is Time For A Love Revolution" is pretty good. I normally have complaints about 14 songs being too long, and this is no exception. I mean, Kravitz could have left off "This Moment Is All There Is" and "A New Door" and been just fine. "I Love The Rain" is a third choice for exclusion.
The album starts strong with "Love Revolution" akin to "Are You Gonna Go My Way". This is followed by a relatively strong "Bring It On" and "Good Morning". Kravitz is back again on "Love Love Love" and "Will You Marry Me". The ballads "If You Want It" and first single "I'll Be Waiting" are good. The second half of the disc is weaker with three tracks I've already mentioned dragging down the show. However, "A Long And Sad Goodbye" is maybe the most interesting song on the disc. I'm not sure if Kravitz is singing about his own father, someone else's father, or just a fictional father. It's one of his most powerfully written songs. Kravitz gets a little Talking Heads' "Take Me To The River"-ish on "Dancin' Til Dawn". The last two tracks seem to be commentary on the current war situation, which is fitting, since the end of war would be a love revolution.
I've read the other reviews here and disagree with the idea that "It Is Time For A Love Revolution" is a return to form or a radical departure from his previous seven albums. To me, this is Lenny Kravitz, just like Captain Crunch is Captain Crunch. Kravitz has been around for 19 years now, and he's an established brand name artist. When I buy his music I expect him to sound like he sounds. Would I mind if he really shook things up and surprised me? Not at all, experimentation is very welcomed. On that note, I will say that Kravitz could stand some experimentation to juice things up a bit. Where's "Mr. Cab Driver" or "Elutheria" or "Black Velveteen" when you need them?
Free Music Review: Getting back to what he does best. Hit: 4 Stars
Written and recorded over the course of the last year, in various locations from New York to Miami, Paris, the Bahamas and Brazil, "It Is Time For A Love Revolution" looks set to hold up as one of the Kravitz's best albums with its raucous rock 'n' roll jams, heavy drums, tight hip-shaking grooves, frenetic guitars and Kravitz's unmistakable croon.
Featuring 14 new songs, the album once again finds the multi-instrumentalist writing, producing, arranging and playing all the tracks on the album, which he has done on all of his releases throughout his career.
As the album title indicates, Kravitz sings songs of love and spiritual revolution, calling on people to open up and let love in their hearts.
He also isn't afraid to get political, using his music to draw attention to the current US war in Iraq and the Vietnam era.
There's no denying the talent of the man: multi-instrumentalist, singer and writer of global hits.
Here he's shunned the risk of over-production to go for a gritty approach.
"Good Morning" is a whirling psychedelic, but sadly sub-Sgt Pepper, ballad - an unflattering Beatles homage.
"I'll Be Waiting" has a great, soulful hook but is an all too brief glimpse of what he is capable of.
It gives way to the dry funk of "Will You Marry Me". The White Stripes do this retro rock 'n' roll and manage to make it sound as vibrant as the day that Hendrix released Purple Haze.
Lenny's clearly enjoying the ride, but too much of this album sounds like demos that he would once have rightly left on the studio floor.
From the singles "Bring It On" and "I'll Be Waiting", as well as "Love, Love, Love", "Dancin' Til Dawn" and "I Want To Go Home", the CD (Lenny's eighth studio album} represents the characteristics that has made Kravitz a vital musician for 18 years.
Free Music Review: Lenny never disappoints Hit: 4 Stars
This review might be a little general. This is not one of Lenny's best but its far from just decent.Lenny continues to give you rock anthems and a couple songs that seem as though written from his personal diary (Papa).I like Lenny b/c he seems to try to write rock n' roll music and doesn't leave his comfort zone. Most of the album is driven by funky guitar rifts and simple (but they are good)lyrics, and actually he plays the guitar more freely on this cd than any of his others. This cd isn't as personal as Baptized was (which had me thinking Lenny was suicidal;Baptized I think was lyrically his most honest/personal cd) but it is more of like a solid effort of good fast songs, good funk music, good slow songs. Lenny is to me a master at making beats. He isn't one of the greatest on the guitar and he really can't sing (although he sounds better with every album)compared to great singers but when it comes to a beat that makes you move your feet and feel like you can't stand still; he is like Pharrell Williams and this cd proves pure rock n' roll; not Heavy Metal; rock n' roll.
Free Music Review: Classic Lenny, And Then Some! Hit: 4 Stars
I am a big fan of Lenny, and this piece does not disappoint. Dancin' Til Dawn is my favorite track. Almost sounds like old Rolling Stones. That is why i love Lenny's stuff so much. It is old school, yet modern enough for me. There is so much funk, soul, blues, rock, whatever other genre you'd care to throw in. Lenny never fails to disappoint. Is this guy permanently in grief, or in love, at the same time? Lenny's lyrics are so deep and personal that every CD you listen to it seems like Lenny is either deeply in love or in deep mourning for a lost love. Whatever the state he was in while writing this CD, he proves once again that he is more than a one hit wonder. Lenny is still one of the most talented solo artist of his time. This piece continues to show the world that he is a multi-dimensional solo artist. Talent at its highest peak. My one and only gripe is "Will You Marry Me". Not for the music, or lyrics, but for the title of the song. Cliche and uninspiring. Other than that, a piece of work that will stand up strong against the test of time.
Free Music Review: Much better than Baptism and LOVED alongside his other greats. Hit: 4 Stars
Man, do I ever Love Love Love this album! Even after just one listen, I honestly think that this is truly a great, diverse album by Lenny. Love Revolution is practically filled with singles as far as I'm concerned. As you might guess, my iPod is (already) filled with around 30+ great Lenny Kravitz tunes. If you want some recommendations of the great songs from Love Revolution, here are the songs that are iPod worthy:
1. Love Revolution.
2. Bring It On.
3. Love Love Love.
4. If You Want It.
5. I'll Be Waiting.
6. Dancin' Til Dawn.
7. A New Door.
8. Back In Vietnam.
9. I Want To Go Home.
(3, 4, 5, 7 & 9 Are Big-Time Faves Already As Far As My List Goes Though)
Praise the Lord!
Ash Wednesday was great and I surely enjoyed getting this album on Ash Wednesday. Baptism (the album) was a disappointment to me, but Love Revolution makes up for it big.
I love Jesus first and foremost, but I also Love Love Love this album. Enough said.
Amen!
