Free Music Review: Time for a Lenny Kravitz revolution Hit: 5 Stars"It is time for a love revolution" is retro rocker Lenny Kravitz's eighth studio album, and along with "5" is my favourite. At #4 in the US, it's his second highest charting album (his Greatest Hits got to #2) and his highest charting studio effort.
Announcing that it is time for a love revolution is upbeat rocker "Love revolution" (with spiritual lyrics). Still on the upbeat side of things are "Bring it on" with a blistering guitar riff, and some sitar from Anishka Shankar (Norah Jones' sister), the thumping "Love love love", which along with the brilliant dance/rock of "Dancin' til dawn' (with a nice sax solo; one of my favourites) wouldn't sound out of place on a Red Hot Chili Peppers album. For "Will you marry me", I was expecting to hear a ballad. What we get is James Brown meets Jimi Hendrix; a retro funk song with skittery beats and heavy electric guitar. Great! "Back in Vietnam" has a riff vaguely reminiscent of the Rolling Stone's "Satisfaction".
Slowing things down are the chugging "Good morning", the lightly country tinged "If you want it", the lovely piano sprinkled "I'll be waiting" (remember "Again"?), the awesome melancholic "I love the rain" with fantastic weeping guitar riffs, the introspective theatrical "A long and sad goodbye" (a beautiful epic ballad about the impact his father's leaving after divorce had on the family, as well as the effect of his recent death on Lenny - Papa you meant the world to me, why did you abandon me?) which has a fantastic guitar solo at the end, much like The Eagle's "Hotel California", the soulful "This moment is all there is", the stripped piano Beatles-esque "A new door" (with again spiritual lyrics), and the soulful "I want to go home".
The Japanese version has 2 bonus tracks which are both brilliant; the reggae tinged falsetto sung "Uncharted terrain". Remember Terence Trent D'arby's 1987 hit "Sign your name"? It's a bit like that. The other is the blues song "Confused" with a great guitar solo and impassioned soulful vocals.
Produced and mostly played by Lenny, this album is amazing. It is time for a Lenny Kravitz revolution.
Free Music Review: I've "Been Waiting" 4 long years for some new Lenny Kravitz! Hit: 4 StarsLenny Kravitz rocks. Ladies love him, guys want to be him, and he is the parent to rock and rolls most indulgent sub-genres. Face it, he's got it. Looking back on the last Kravitz album I bought, also his last album prior to IT IS TIME FOR A LOVE REVOLUTION (BAPTISM), it wasn't Lenny Kravitz at his very best. Sure tunes like "Sistamamalover" and "Why Are We Running" were genuine Kravitz, the album was more filler than substance. IT IS TIME FOR A LOVE REVOLUTION is the exact opposite; Kravitz is at his very best performing tunes the caliber of "American Woman" and "Where Are You Gonna Go?". First single "I'll Be Waiting" proves that the real Lenny Kravitz is back with a vengeance.
"Love Revolution" starts the album off right with Kravitz's signature old school, 1970s Traditional rock and roll feel. There's nothing flashy about the songwriting or even Kravitz's performance, but it is a solid track and a standout amongst an album absent of true filler. "Bring It On" isn't as strong as "Love Revolution", but it does feature some great guitar playing from Kravitz, which is one of Lenny's great strengths. "Good Morning" features more old-school rock and roll vibes, but it feels fresh for whatever reason. Kravitz sounds top notch here and the lazy groove is perfect. "Love, Love, Love" is the fourth straight consistent track. 4/4 is pretty damn good right? It only gets better.
"If You Want It" has a killer rock refrain that would make any 70s rock male/band smile, while killer first single "I'll Be Waiting" feels perfect in every way. While "I'll Be Waiting" should feel dated, it doesn't in the least sense - the string laden ballad easily fits into 2008. What's even better is that "I'll Be Waiting" trumps BAPTISM's flat ballad, "Calling All Angels" by a mile. You feel that Kravitz is more pumped up on this album. On "Will You Marry Me", Kravitz is influenced by the work of legends Prince and perhaps even Morris Day. His funk-rock ruminations are some of the most creative I've seen from Kravitz which should clearly transfer not only to white audiences, but more urban audiences.
"I Love The Rain" is another soulful-slow jam, while none can deny the emotion of the fantastic "A Long And Sad Goodbye" in which Lenny screams "papa...". "Dancin' Till Dawn" would be at home on any Prince album just like "Will You Marry Me" and maybe my very favorite (other than "I'll Be Waiting") of LOVE REVOLUTION. "A Moment Is All There Is" as well as "A New Door" are both strong and consisten as well. "Back in Vietnam" isn't bad, but doesn't shine as much as the very best. "I Want To Go Home" uses the usual "Kravitz chordal progression" as its basis, and it works out good, if not great.
Overall, Kravitz has released his strongest body of work in sometime and the numbers seem to be on his side as well as the album debuted at #4, his highest peak for a studio Album (only his GREATEST HITS bowed better). 4 stars from my perspective.
Free Music Review: A strong effort from Lenny. Hit: 4 StarsI have never been a real fan of Lenny Kravitz, but I really enjoyed this latest album of his. The album really is a love revolution. The first half of the album is Lenny in love and happy. He sounds like a man in love and a couple times like a born again Christian with references to God and Jesus. The second half of the album is a man in love but dealing with the pain of that love. In a couple songs, the pain of being distant from family that he loves. The lyrics are deep and thoughtful, and I found myself connecting with Lenny's music as he took me on a journey through his love revolution.
The sound reminds me of late sixties early seventies rock.
Free Music Review: GREAT! Hit: 5 StarsI have definitely been a Lenny fan since "Are You Gonna Go My Way" but this album is amazing! The guitar is awesome in these songs and his voice makes this album worthwhile. Great addition to my collection and i could not WAIT till this album came out. This album reminds me more of his album 5 than any of the others though. Good job Lenny!
