Free Music Notes for Leonard Cohen: I'm Your ManFree Music Review: Tribute to the maestro Hit: 4 Stars
I was prepared to fly to the other side of the country when I read about the performances of Came so far for beauty at the Sydney Arts Festival in 2005. Unhappily all seats at all shows were sold out in about 45 minutes of the sales opening so I was delighted when this album was released. There are some very good tracks on it and some not so good so that I wonder why they bothered (interpretation is flat and uninspiring compared to the original - an unfair comparison, really. Nobody gets near...). I've now ordered the DVD of the film, the visual performances might make a difference. Still, the good stuff outweighs the ordinary, putting this album in the highly recommended category.
Free Music Review: Movie in uneven, so is music Hit: 4 Stars
Just came home from seeing the movie. A little too long and some performances were painful (anthony for one) to watch. I agree with those who wish different performers had done the songs... tho I have always been a McGarrigle sisters fan.
Strangely, Hallelujah is not on this cd, tho in the movie and one of the most moving performances I thought.. Wonder why it was omitted???
Stiil over all, it is Leanard Cohen music and that is always special. I liked his closing number with U2 and I think he did too....
The only drawback to the cd is that the film gives a context to nearly all songs and they flow out of a narrative. That won't be evident on the cd.
Free Music Review: Superb concert recording Hit: 4 Stars
I was at the Brighton concerts that these recordings were mostly taken from and as a reminder of two stunning nights of music they can't be better. Standout tracks include the two by Martha Wainwright, the two by Teddy Thompson, Perla Batalla's "Bird on a Wire", Rufus' "Chelsea Hotel" and (from the Sydney concert) Antony's "If it be your Will". Two major disappointments though; the inclusion of U2 as backing band for Leonard Cohen's own version of "Tower of Song" seems done for purely commercial reasons and doesn't work, and the nonsensical ommission of Linda Thompson's sublime take on "Alexandra Leaving". Here's hoping it's included on the dvd release.
Free Music Review: Great tribute! Hit: 4 Stars
Watched the special on Sundance Channel as I'm a huge U2 fan and saw them in the commercial for it. I had never heard of Leonard Cohen previously. I am now a big fan as a direct result of this special (U2 and Leonard sing the last song on the cd "Tower of Song.") So the soundtrack is as awesome as the special, however one disappointment was that the song Hallejulah was not on the soundtrack cd. But never fear buy the Essential Leonard Cohen as well and you will not be disappointed in the least! Hallejulah and all the others are there and much, much more. I am now a lifetime fan of Leonard Cohen and am sharing the experience with all my music friends!
Free Music Review: Fabulous & Friendly Variations Hit: 4 Stars
Good work in preserving the respect due to this major songwriter/sage. Really enjoyable on repeated listening, especially contrasting "Tower of Song"s and the standout cuts by Nick Cave, Teddy Thompson, Rufus Wainwright, Antony. Only complaint: Where's "Hallelujah"? It was in the documentary--and it was great!
