Free Music Notes for Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man

Free Music Review: A Treasure for Leonard Cohen Fans
Hit: 5 Stars

Aside from this soundtrack is the film which features most of these songs being performed at an Australian tribute concert. That unto itself may be a better buy when the time comes, as it hopefully will have extra performances available, not to mention the visual joy of watching Rufus and Martha Wainwright, Jarvis Cocker, Antony, Nick Cave and the rest dig into Cohen's brilliant and immensely poetic words. Like Bob Dylan, Cohen's canon is so great that a multitude of artists can recreate it's parts and reveal the depths of the song and themselves...I don't know why Rufus Wainwright's Hallelujah performance isn't here, and Famous Blue Raincoat, The Guests, and if memory serves, Bird on a Wire weren't in the theatrical release of the film. A great album, but I still hope for a fully loaded DVD!

Of course, nothing beats hearing the man himself, so it's fitting that the disk closes with Cohen performing the richest version of Tower of Song I've ever heard (and, no, Hank Williams still hasn't answered yet). But the rest is mostly pure gold--Rufus Wainwright's take on Everybody Knows, his sister Martha's version of The Traitor, and Teddy Thompson's "Tonight Will be Fine" are especially, well, fine. Very fine.

Unexpectedly wonderful--Antony's rendition of "If it Be Your Will." You'll either love it or hate it--I love it.

My only complaint is that it should have been a multiple disk set so that all the performers who appeared at the tour's various venues might have been included.

Free Music Review: Cohen Fete
Hit: 5 Stars

I am a great fan of Cohen's music and voice (less so of the man) and have many of his albums. Despite that fact, after seeing the movie "I'm Your Man," I had to have this album as well. Consisting of Cohen's songs sung by others, including several members of the Wainwright/McGarrigle family, the soundtrack was superb. I'd never heard of Antony before but am hooked on his version of "If It Be Your Will." The only disappointment was that the album did not include the soul-melting rendition of "1000 Kisses Deep" that was in the movie. The least appealing song was "Tower of Song," the only song sung by Cohen (w/ U2), but it is one of my least favorites.

Free Music Review: next to being there...this is as good as it gets

Discovered this concert film at netflix. Loved it so much I purchased the audio cd. Leonard Cohen's music is wonderful of itself, but the new interpretaions by this diverse group of young singers made it all new again. Hearing these "next-generation" performers has opened a whole new world to me. Rufus and Martha Wainwright, Teddy Thompsom, Nick Cave, Jarvis Cocker, Beth Orton, Anthony are all major talents! And the few elders on the CD, The McGarrigles, Perla Batala, Julie Christensen, and the U2 guys were a revelation performing this music! Unfortunately, not all the songs on the movie are included in the audio cd. But what is there is exceptional!

Free Music Review: Exquisite

All but one of these songs is a cover version. Leonard sings only at the very end, his gravelly golden voice perched perfectly there at the top of the incredible tower of song that is this soundtrack . Antony's mid-CD rendition of "If it be your will" is unimaginably, breathtakingly poignant. Rufus Wainwright's "Chelsea Hotel" is intoxicating, and Martha Wainwright's delivers an excellent version of "The Traitor". Beth Orton's "Sisters of Mercy" didn't quite do it for me, but the other songs are thoroughly unmissable. His woeful but gloriously uplifting poetry has been superbly captured on this CD.
