Free Music Notes for Essential Leonard CohenFree Music Review: LEONARD COHEN/The Essential Leonard Cohen Hit: 5 Stars
Leonard Cohen has been called a modern Gnostic poet, and there's justification for this. His career has spanned over forty years and he has never compromised or bowed to pop fashion. His music is poignant and demonstrates European influences. Cohen's lyrics are often brutal or a result of spiritual & sexual synthesis. He is one of the great poet/singers of our times.
The backup music is g-r-e-a-t, some music so understated as to be barely audible. It conveys sensativity with a driving rhythm.
There are many newer songs or songs I never heard before on this CD.
Alexandra Leaving with its haunting melody is a personal favorite.

Free Music Review: A master collection.. Hit: 5 Stars
I'll admit it. Before listening to this album, I had only the slightest idea of who Leonard Cohen was - he was, to me, merely a name mentioned in a Nirvana song and, well, actually, that's it. He was a name.
I don't remember how exactly I came to own the album, or how I managed to live my life for so long without even knowing about the man, but upon first listen, I was in love - Mr. Cohen's voice is like the smooth, comforting voice of a father or grandfather trying to explain to you the secrets of life way before you can even begin to comprehend them - everything, in fact - he is the complete package - a master of his trade and this, this essential collection a master collection. Granted there are probably a few songs missing - as there are on ALL 'Essential Collection' albums, but if you are new Mr. Cohen, and you want something that'll give you the most for your buck, this album is it. A five star review has never come so easily.
Free Music Review: essential Cohen Hit: 5 Stars
From such early classics as "Suzanne" and "Sisters of Mercy" to such recent gems as "Democracy" and "Leaving Alexandra," Leonard Cohen has been a consistently stunning songwriter and the best of all the song-writing poets. His singing is perhaps an acquired taste - some love it and some hate it - but it complements the songs. Any Cohen fan will argue with some of the choices here - the albums _Recent Songs_ and _Death of a Ladies Man_, in particular, are underrepresented, and the classic "Joan of Arc" is left off - but every song is poetic and thought provoking. Listening to this CD has renewed my interest in some songs that I hadn't noticed much before, such as "Night Comes On" and "Everybody Knows." This CD is a major release by an important artist. Cohen's songs will be remembered long after 98% of our contemporary pop music is forgotten.
Free Music Review: A revelation. A make-out album for thinking adults. Hit: 5 Stars
This is our "can't get to sleep" album, our make-out album, our "after-make-out" album, our "early weekend morning laze-about" album.
My wife and I have found disc 2 mesmerizing, dreamy, unique, substantive, evocative, mysterious, powerful. Grown-up love songs with haunting melodies and writerly, knowing performances and lyrics. Devastating, in a good way.
1000 kisses deep, indeed.

Man, he hits 'em out of the park.
I can't believe this is my first LC album, after ignoring him for 30+ years.
My 22-year old rock songwriter/musician son at first laughed at LC's unusual singing style, but after hearing these songs a few more times, he now "gets it."
There sure aren't a lot of songwriters this good. He is the real deal.
Free Music Review: Outstanding, definitive collection Hit: 5 Stars
I loved Leonard Cohen's first album but lost touch with most of his middle-to-later work. Then a friend gave me a copy of this CD and I was blown away. The copy had a few glitches so I had to have the original and bought it. This double CD contains all the essential tracks (Suzanne, Bird On The Wire, Hallelujah of course) and showcases the entire career of this brilliant songwriter and performer. This CD inspired me to go out of town to see him live on his 2008-10 tour. The 11-piece band is superb. Excellent musicianship. Every song they performed sounded like the record, and of course the Webb sisters (plus 1) backing vocals are otherworldly. Leonard was warm and loving and appreciative of the audience, and we responded in kind. He's in his 70s but he pranced around the stage like a teenager. See him live if you can, and buy his records - but if you only buy one, this is the one to buy.
