Free Music Review: Heard this performed at Lissadell, Yeats Country
Hit: 5 Stars

I was at Leonard Cohen's concert in Lissadel, Sligo, home county of W.B. Yeats. Len quoted from Yeats at the concert.
He went through the set that's played on this CD. He was courteous and humourous, but most of all calm. He introduced each of the musician's (twice), in a measure of deep respect. Sharon Robinson was acknowledged as collaborator on a number of songs, and the backing singers were introduced as `the Incomparable Webb Sisters'. As you might expect from someone of Len's age, there were not many theatrics on stage, he wore a buttoned up suit and, towards nightfall, a scarf as well. The weather was typical for North West Ireland, overcast and scattered showers. However the performance was magical, the musicianship exquisite; Len even made a few jokes about his own golden voice.
The crowd was (like myself) middle aged; and the venue was done up for outdoor concert comfort - indeed the most irritating thing for me was that people continued to get up and get hot dogs etc through the performance.
Nonetheless an experience; a great memory to have. The incident that comes most to mind is the Webb sisters doing a cartwheel on stage; enormously incongruous yet hugely entertaining.

Free Music Review: A treasure chest.
Hit: 5 Stars

Leonard Cohen was truly blessed with a golden voice, as he whimsically opines in "The Tower of Song". More importantly, he is one of the most poignant song writers of our age. This is clearly a seminal collection of his work to date. I've been a fan ever since "Suzanne" took me down to touch her perfect body with my mind. The holy dove moved in me when Cohen found the secret chord that drew the "Halleluiah" from my lips... in a provocative song that's impossible to resist singing alongside the master. And even though I'm a little on the right and he's a little on the left, one can't help but admire his sentimental journey of "Democracy"... perhaps the finest protest song ever written. And if you're looking for total expressions of love and emotion, he's not lying when he croons, "I'm your man." Cohen's music soothes and excites while his lyrics penetrate and inspire contemplative thought. He is a consummate stylist, who elicits hidden meaning and promotes insight with every well turned phrase. This is a treasure chest of his very best songs showcased in his finest performance, lavishly produced and graciously served up for your total listening pleasure.

Free Music Review: Excellend CD trace of a wonderful tour . . .
Hit: 5 Stars

The sound quality is very good, and Mr. Cohen did make sure he used the excellent Leanne Unger as mixer. My only regret is that those folks picked London as the show to record for the obligatory double CD. I think something grandiose like the O2 Arena might be an interesting venue for the DVD. But I remain convinced the CD would have even been better quality (sound, performance, intimacy, nuances, flamenco-guitar solos, etc.) had they picked a smaller theatre such as Paris' Olympia for instance. But Mr. Cohen and the suits over at Columbia are understandably in a rush to take advantage of the 2008-2009 tour's extraordinary momentum, and make money off of it. I don't blame them; it's tough out there, especially in light of Leonard's recent financial fiasco with his "friend" & "manager" Kelley Lynch. If I were an executive at Sony Music, I would release half a dozen double-CD package from the tour, like Pearl Jam and Tori Amos did not too long ago. Only means of capturing a tiny bit of the magic of such a remarkable tour.

Free Music Review: I love this 2-CD Set and wish I discovered him before!
Hit: 5 Stars

I discovered Leonard Cohen when he appeared on PBS recently. I am 66 and somehow missed being exposed to his music until now! Well, I absolutely fell in love with his voice, his band, and his backup singers. I like his low voice.
I bought another CD Set of his when he was younger, "Essential Leonard Cohen" after reading the reviews on here and was disappointed. When he doesn't have the band and backup singers, his younger, higher voice just doesn't carry the songs like his new performance does.

So now, what I wish for is another new CD production of his current voice, band and singers, performing his songs that aren't on the "Live in London" set. From the "Essential Leonard Cohen" CDs, I gather he started singing in his lower registers gradually over the years. So, for me, he is perfect right now and I wish I had known about him when he was in Kansas City the fall of '09. I don't go to concerts, but I definitely would if he comes back touring the United States again.

Free Music Review: I love the music of Leonard Cohen
Hit: 5 Stars

I did not get the chance to see Canadian Leonard Cohen perform last summer at the O2 Arena in London. This two disc set is the next best thing though His deep voice sounds mysterious, but it can also be very sensual and soothing. I love his well known songs like "Bird On A Wire" and the stirring "Hallelujah". "First We Take Manhattan" and "Dance Me To The End of Love" are definite highlights here. I also like a lesser known song of his entitled "Suzanne". This is a bittersweet love song featuring Cohen's beautiful guitar playing. I love the song "Democracy". This song makes me think about all the sacrifices people have made for democracy around the world. "Boogie Street" is a smooth song featuring Sharon Robinson. This song is about getting back into the rhythm of life. "If It Be Your Will" is a beautiful song featuring the Webb sisters. I love the music of Leonard Cohen on this two disc set.
