Free Music Notes for Ten New SongsFree Music Review: FROM THE LATEST HIT TO THE WISDOM OF THE OLD Hit: 5 Stars
In terms of production and instrumentation, Leonard Cohen retired to Florida 20 years ago. I'M YOUR MAN was a truely great album despite suffering from synth abuse. THE FUTURE had the same malady, but once again the outstanding quality of the songs saved the proceedings. 10 NEW SONGS breaks no new ground in terms of cheesy prodution and yet once again, the lyrics play hero to yet another damsel in distress.
Sure, he whispers and croaks in septagenarian mockery of Barry White. But lyrically Cohen's sharp as ever, and that's how one should approach this album. It's basically a slim volume of new poems with obligatory musical accompaniment. Armed with lines like "I fought against the bottle but I had to do it drunk" he still hits the weary mark of the heart. Sentiments like " Love went on and on /until It reached an open door" don't hurt either.
Suffice it to say I'm a fan. Though I generally find solace in the dark acoustic majesty of SONGS OF LOVE & HATE, Time goes to show that you can't keep that kind of intensity up forever. The presence of Sharon Robinson is also a welcome replacement to the chorus of tipsy Baccanals Cohen has utilized in recent years. Her souful croon goes to show less is truely more. When she sings, "You kiss my lips and then it's done" a title like BOOGIE STREET takes on a much more ominous meaning---and the old CHELSEA HOTEL Cohen shines on through.
Stand out tracks for me are IN MY SECRET LIFE, THAT DON'T MAKE IT JUNK & BOOGIE STREET. Though there's no surpises, I can't say I'm disappointed. 10 NEW SONGS is just another remarkable page in the forgiving, loving voice Cohen found in THE FUTURE.
Free Music Review: 9 years is a long time to wait - but it's worth it Hit: 5 Stars
At 67, Leonard Cohen follows the monumental "The Future" with another astonishing release.
As already mentioned by others, this is as much Sharon Robinson's album as Cohen's. If, as some have said, the music sounds like it was played on one of those old Atari or Casio keyboards or a sequencer, then great, because it all works. The instrumental aspects of this album are simple and understated, a case of (a lot) less is definitely (a lot) more.
The vocals show Cohen on as good as form as his voice will ever get. The harmonies of Sharon Robinson add warmth and give the whole a beauty and lustre, so much so that it is a masterpiece.
"The Future" will not be beaten. As an album, it is, in my opinion, Cohen's greatest - and that's saying something when one consider's the brilliance of his previous albums. But on this, "By The Rivers Dark" is the absolute greatest Cohen song I have ever heard. It is a gem - and one of my favourite songs of all-time. Another reviewer suggests you will want to listen to it over and over again. Too true - it's been on repeat for the last hour and I hear something new every time I hear it. It sends a tingle down my spine!
Others which make this another memorable album are "A Thousand Kisses Deep", "Here It Is" and "Boogie Street", but the simplicity of the music and Cohen downbeat lyrics mean that there is something special in all these ten new songs.
A wonderful album - can Cohen do no wrong? I doubt it!
Free Music Review: Another great Leonard Cohen CD! Hit: 5 Stars
Remember when he sang :"First we take Manhattan", what does that song mean today? It's the power of great poetry that a poem changes its meaning as time goes by, it's a whole new poem. Then in his previous studio cd from 1992 he sings: "I have seen the future and it is murder." but now in 2001 he sings about love, secret love, spiritual love and more love, just like he did in his first records. Cohen has done all the circle back and politics are not part of his persona in this cd. His voice grows just deeper, like John Lee Hooker in his last years, the voice is so deep it's like listening to someone singing from a well of from the other side of life. It's a great Leonard Cohen cd again. I am only in my second listening but I can feel this CD will grow on me and grow like all his CD's did in the last 30 years. A friend is back, there is hope for humanity! When I first opened this cd I was wondering if this was a Cohen cd or a series of duets with Shana Robinson, she cowrote all the songs, plays all the tracks on synth. and sings in all the songs. But this are not duets, her singing is more backsinging and although I can only guess I think the songs are 95% cohen and 5% Robinson. I don't know who Robinson is, her voice is sweet and completes the darkness of Cohen songs, but after all, this is a Leonard Cohen cd.
Free Music Review: Leonard's Six Perfect Songs Hit: 5 Stars
What can one say about this CD that hasn't already been said here?
Let me add my 2 cents...
I had not listened to it all the way through for a while.
I just did following my watching the recent film on Leonard.
I agree that it is by no means a perfect 10.
I had the same response upon first hearing that many have already mentioned:
the musical production left me somewhat disappointed,
except for "By The River's Dark," which grabbed me from the get-go!
But eventually I got over that and did what I always have done with Leonard's songs: give myself over to his poetic fire! Then I enter this evocative-provocative world-of-words that only a man who has gone to the edges and back--and live to tell about it--can craft.
There are six perfect songs here: these alone make it a 5-star CD.
They are deep, rich and trance-inducing: they keep on giving light and delight even after many listenings:
"A Thousand Kisses Deep"
'Here It is"
"Love Itself"
"By The River's Dark"
"You Have Loved Enough"
"Boogie Street"
They are some of the best song-poems ever written by Leonard (or anybody else).
Just lend them your ears, your heart will follow.
Free Music Review: Cohen enters a new world of simplicity and poetry. Hit: 5 Stars
I have been a Leonard Cohen fan for some time now, and allow me to say - this collection of songs may be some of his best. From the title you notice a new plain simplicity. It's no secret that Cohen has been living in "isolation" for the past several years and you get a sense of his new enlightenment. Gone are the many references to God. Enter an almost subdued album full of pain, anxiety, and Love (of course). Gone are those few back-up singers that could test the ear. Enter one voice that blends well with Mr.Cohen's. One thing that seems to be most constant in Cohen's albums is the infamous drum machine. Well, it's here again. Most of these songs are "slow" and it turns out to be great back-round, rainy day, and late night music. Some stand out tracks would be: The first - "In my Secret Life". Classic Cohen here. Let's be honest folks, we don't buy his albums for the music - we buy it for the lyrics. He attempts to paint vivid pictures, and we succumb. My personal favourite "By the River Dark" is an amazing trancing hypnotizing dark song. One of his best in a very long time. You'll want to keep listening to it over and over again. Well thanks, for reading this. 5 stars for lyrics, 5 stars for Cohen's deep broken voice. Cheers.
