Free Music Notes for Ten New SongsFree Music Review: Hold your breath . . . Hit: 5 Stars
"Ten New Songs" seems to me to be the album LC has been put on earth to give us. I know that might sound pretentious, but how else to convey my experience of listening to songs like "Alexandra Leaving" (so deeply noble and heart-rending)and "Love Itself" (surely recounting an actual episode of transcendence, the language has the directness and mystery demanded by the ineffable). No other album has so caused me to hold my breath, figuratively and almost literally, as I quiet myself to allow the power of these whispered-sung intimacies to saturate my heart. Well, I've fallen into quite a bit of poetic reverie describing "Ten", but that's okay. My suggestion: If you are open to art that gently but intensely touches deep emotional and metaphysical truths, or if you love Cohen or Zen, or if you conceive of yourself as on a Path, this album is--to use a cliche--a "must have". (And by the way, the melodies and arrangements are concise and wonderful)
Free Music Review: the world is always a better place w/ a new leonard cohen cd Hit: 5 Stars
I was hooked on his music the first time I heard "Suzanne" on FM radio lo those many years ago and his new offering is on a par with anything he has ever done. There are songwriters and there is Leonard Cohen. I will always remmeber when I used to put his music on for my friends while we were growing up in the early 70s. They would want to jump out the window. "He's so depressing," they'd say. Nonsense. His music is gorgeous and rich. He writes the most beautiful and spiritutally honest songs of anyone alive. "In My Secret Life" is an instant masterpiece. There is much to commend this cd, which I just received about three days ago and have listened to nothing else since. Perhaps one is not always in the mood for Leonard Cohen, but listening to his unique music and poetry is one of life's great joys. The world is always a better place when there is a new Leonard Cohen disc to listen to day and night until the mood lifts and it's ok to settle for ordinary stuff again.
Free Music Review: Moany Groany Heart Hit: 5 Stars
I listened to samples yesterday and fulfilled my mission to own the album immediately. In between other callings, I shopped and found the last one in the L.C. stack and thanked my lucky five stars. I find the music totally enthralling and hypnotizing, even without the lyrics. And the lyrics are classic Cohen. If you've experienced the magic of love and lost the person but not the magical afterglow, then you are in the bittersweet, melancholic zone in which this music resides. No one quite delivers this soul massage like Leonard Cohen, particularly in "Ten New Songs." Contrary to the comments of previous customer reviewers, I find the production and accompaniment of Sharon Robinson to be a perfect fit, and I have a sneaking suspicion that Cohen was supremely satisfied with the process and the product. And that, assuming it is true, is genuine art. I will listen to "Moany Groany Heart (Ten New Songs)" enumerable times and each time it will sound better still.
Free Music Review: You'll never find him on MTV. ( unfortunately ) Hit: 5 Stars
If you have never heard Leonard Cohen, don't expect hot musical tracks or a great singing voice. His style of background music which had always been minimal has been reduced to little more than a beat which our song meister seems to miss more often than he hits. The deep dark raspy voice has become deeper, darker and raspier to the point where it is sometimes hard to recognize a tune eminating from the artist's lips. From reading this review, some people may get the impression that I don't like Leonard Cohen's music. They would be wrong! In this collection of songs Mr.C. does what he does best. That is to use the poetry of words to create mental imagery which will transport you into the magical realms of the mind. Seldom does such a collection of music come along by a master poet at the height of his craft. If you prefer the power of the lyric voice to the power of a guitar amplifier, this is the album for you.
Free Music Review: Welcome back, Mr. Cohen.... Hit: 5 Stars
This was Leonard Cohen's first album in 9 years after a stay in a Zen monastery. It feels like he's never been away. This is another great work by Mr. Cohen, sad, depressing, uplifiting, haunting, and moving. Some have complained about the spare instrumentation (mostly a synclavier/computer performed by Sharon Robinson, who co-wrote all the songs here with Leonard), but I think it works very well. It's simple and straightforward, and it really enhances the sad, Scotch drenched lyrics. A Thousand Kisses Deep is my favorite here, along with Alexandra Leaving (a great title to a great song), and By the Rivers Dark. This isn't my favorite Cohen album (that's The Future), but this is probably the 2nd most played album in my Cohen collection. I hope that Mr. Cohen doesn't go away for 9 years again. Everyone missed him. But it's amazing that despite the fact he was gone for so long, he didn't miss a beat.
