Free Music Review: Graceful
Hit: 5 Stars

What can you say about Leonard Cohen that hasn't already been said? He's probably one of the most revered and analyzed artists of the last thirty years. He's written some of the greatest lyrics in pop history. The guy just seems to get better and better. Wow. What an album. Forget the production. Get over it. It's miminial. That's the point. The man is a minimalist now. Waves of synth bass and the occasional key comes rolling in out of the black. It's lovely. The songs are beautiful. Standouts? They all are. Okay, okay, the *real* standouts are IN MY SECRET LIFE, ALEXANDRA LEAVING and LOVE ITSELF. IMSL is the best thing he's done as far as pop music goes since...well, I can't remember anything better. Just amazing. This guy is a master. Buy it and turn yourself on to the unstoppable legend that is Leonard Cohen. May he live to be a hundred and ten.

Free Music Review: slip into your masterpiece
Hit: 5 Stars

Aside from a couple really cool songs like "Waiting on a miracle" I never knew much of this artist. For me, the rush of excitement came after renting the DVD "Leonard Cohen: I'm your man". Although the DVD was mostly full of musical fans doing horrendous covers, the glimpses gleamed of the monk-like Cohen were enrapturing.

The music on this CD is lovely, strengthened immensely by Sharon Robinson. The lyrics deeply (yet simply) encompass the silence for those of us without a personal god.

"You live your life as if it's real, A Thousand Kisses Deep."

"So come, my friends, be not afraid.
We are so lightly here.
It is in love that we are made;
In love we disappear.
Though all the maps of blood and flesh
Are posted on the door,
There's no one who has told us yet
What Boogie Street is for."

Can a recording be both philosophical and sexy? The answer is yes - and "Ten New Songs" is both. I resisted getting this for a while, but, unlike many recordings that heavily rely on synthesizers, I found this one to work unbelievably well. Cohen and Sharon Robinson are a winning and surprizingly sultry combination. Her voice and accompaniment, along with the production, perfectly compliment "The Master's Song". His words are both powerful and minimal but evoke a detached enlightenment and ironic romanticism that Cohen has continued to refine over the years. His voice is like a tuning fork that immediately sets one's brain waves to deep alpha. She is the feminine counterpart to his ancient, sacred beast. This material gets better and better and reveals more with each listening. A word should also be given to the engineering and mixing - the word is "superb".

Free Music Review: Wonderful music and words for eternity
Hit: 5 Stars

I am pleased with the many positive critics for this album and shocked by the negative. The fact is, that Leonard himself wanted this sound. Sharon Robinson only offered her demos and wanted to add real instruments and real strings. But Leonard insisted on this demo sound. You have to listen to the album several times, first the songs seem to be very similar. Later with a little patience you will be swept away by the beauty of the songs and the words. You don't care about the synthy sound anymore. LC is still a great poet but I am afraid his time as a composer is over. For me it is surprising how Mrs. Robinson found the right melodies for the lyrics. They are absolutely in the tradition and the feeling of Cohens latest CDs. I love all periods in Cohen's work but this new CD is an alltime favourite, I am never tired to listen to it.

Free Music Review: It grows on you
Hit: 5 Stars

The first time I listened to this album was on my fancy headphones and I almost instantly gave up on it. That drum machine, geez! The music, argh! "Get some real instruments!", I cried.

However, after giving it a few chances because of the lyrics I now can't stop listening. Somehow the music fits nicely in the background behind Cohens crooked and Robinsons smooth voice.

The album feels like everything fits together better than it did on the two previous studio albums (the only other ones I have). There's not really a bad track here. Favorites includes Boogie Street, In My Secret Life and By The Rivers Dark.

As others have pointed out, the lyrics are great.

O Crown of Light, O Darkened One,
I never thought we'd meet.
You kiss my lips, and then it's done:
I'm back on Boogie Street.
