Free Music Notes for Les Miserables (1987 Original Broadway Cast)Free Music Review: A Great Recording! Hit: 5 Stars
Despite what I know is lacking on this recoding thanks to the observations of many below, it is still one of my personal favorites. The music is breathtaking, the story unforgetable, and the cast is (overall) a dream. Colm Wilkenson always has been and always will be the definitive Valjean. The power and sincerity he pours into the part on this recording have never been matched, even by himself on other recodings of the show. Terence Mann also makes an impression as the obsessive police officer Javart. Rather then turning the part into a cartoonish heel, he makes Javart into a human being, especially in his memorable redition of "Stars." As for the rest of the cast, Judy Kuhn and Francis Ruffelle make fine turns as Cossette and Eponine. I especially love Ruffelle's emotional rendition of "On My Own." This recoding would be perfection if nt for Randy Graff and David Bryant, who are incapable of even hitting the right keys, much less meet the standards set by Patti LuPone and Michael Ball as Fantine and Marius on the Original London Cast. Generally speaking, this recording is wonderful, and no Broadway lovers musical library should be without it.
Free Music Review: Les Misérables ne c'est pas Misérable du tout! Hit: 5 Stars
I'm a sucker for big numbers and a rotating stage, so it is no surprise that I love this show! This original broadway cast recording is great and really captures the essence of the show. As someone who read the novel by Victor Hugo first, I was a little disappointed at some of the cuts and some of the artistic alterations, but I can understand the reasoning behind those choices and it still makes for a great story. Colm Wilkinson (Jean Valjean) has a ridiculously awesome voice and Frances Ruffelle (Eponine) is my favorite character to root for (even though you know what's going to happen). I really love the energy of the track "Plummet Attack" and the multi-layered company tracks like "At the End of the Day" and "One Day More." I was disappointed with the songs "In My Life" and "A Heart Full of Love" towards the end of the first act, thinking that they were a little cliché and boring, but I know that has little to do with Judy Kuhn's (Cosette) vocal performance and more to do with the compositions. Although the novel that this show is based on is one of my favorites ever and I'm probably biased, I think this album still stands up nearly 20 years later. Check it out!
Free Music Review: It is the "Master of the House"... Hit: 5 Stars
This album will not disappoint you, whether you be a die-hard Les Mis. fan or someone who wants to try something new. The music, storyline, and emotion is wonderful in this play. I think that Colm Wilkinson is absolutely fantastic, and his solo, "Bring Him Home" makes you cry (it does to me every single time!). Every song from the rambunctious "Master of the House" to the spine-tingling ensemble "One More Day" to Eponine's tearful lament "On My Own" makes a lasting impression and tells the story beautifully, in a way that I believe Victor Hugo himself would be proud of. By the way, if you enjoy the music (which you undoubtedly will), read the original book by Victor Hugo, and you won't be disappointed. It carries the same emotion and fullness as the musical and really makes you think about life and love. The live-performance musical is excellent and should be seen by every Les Miserables fan. If you are looking for something new and truly touching, or just wish to get reaquainted with this spectacular story, I would whole-heartedly recommend this album.
Free Music Review: The Best Recording of the Best Musical. EVER. Hit: 5 Stars
From first seeing Les Mis on stage in New York many years ago, and having subsequently seen the Philadelphia and San Diego stage productions as well, this original Broadway recording has spolied me for any other.Boublil and Schonberg created a masterpiece which frequently has me trying to decide which I love more, the lyrics or the music. I cannot help but compare all newcomers to the original Broadway cast who, in my humble opinion, gave the richest performance ever. There's been no Valjean, Fontine, Javert or Eponine like them since! I wore out my first set of CDs and recently purchase a second. Yet, through thousands of listenings over a decade, certain portions still move me so that I weep as if hearing them for the first time. I cannot imagine a better rendition than that of the orchestra on this recording nor the powerful, polished voices enunciating the lyrics as has no cast that has followed. There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe how much I love this recording. Needless to say, I more than very highly recommend it!
Free Music Review: Les Miserables CD- (1987 Original Broadway Cast) by Alain Boublil Hit: 5 Stars
Les Miserables (1987 Original Broadway Cast)
This 2 disc set is great. This original cast is spectacular. These are the voices I remember. I had a cassette from the 80's which is so worn out that I can no longer play it so I finally looked on Amazon and purchased this CD online not knowing whether the seller was reputable or not.
My CD arrived carefully boxed and wrapped bubble wrap so it would not be damaged in shipping. There was an extremely nice note from the seller about their shipping practices, additionally asking me to let them know if the CD was damaged in any way. I appreciated this very much. Of course the CD arrived in perfect condition because this seller took such thoughtful care in their packaging prior to shipping.
This seller is small and wants repeat business. I can assure you that any future music purchases I make through Amazon will be made through this seller!
Way to go!
