Free Music Notes for Les Miserables (1987 Original Broadway Cast)Free Music Review: One of the Best Recordings Hit: 5 Stars
This recording is excellent. Colm Wilkinson as Valjean is at his best--he sounds better than he does on the London cast, and his singing is more clear than on the Tenth Anniversary version. Terrence Mann delivers an inspired and forceful performance as Javert. Judy Kuhn sounds younger and more vibrant as Cosette than she does on the Tenth Anniversary recording. Randy Graff and David Bryant as Fantine and Marius are passable. Michael Maguire and Frances Ruffelle as Enjolras and Eponine are outstanding--both won Tonies for their roles. The biggest fault with this recording is that it's not complete, but neither are the original London or Tenth Anniversary versions, and of the three, I would recommend this one based on the strength of the leads (which London, with the exceptions of Wilkinson, Ruffelle, and Michael Ball as Marius, lacks) and the clarity of the recording, which is much better than that of the Tenth Anniversary.
Free Music Review: Breathtaking! Hit: 5 Stars
I fell in love with Les Miserables when our choir had to sing,"I Dreamed a Dream". I rushed out and bought the music. I found it hard to enjoy as I had not seen the musical yet. That spring, the musical came to town and I went. What a truely moving, great epic. I have never been moved as I did that night. I did not have enough kleenex to contain myself! The music has spirit, it is kept alive with such passion, love, and torment and pain all woven into a musical masterpiece. The comical songs are catchy, you'll be singing them...as they won't leave your head for a while. If your like me, this tape was only the beginning. I ended up with the whole symphonic recording (every note and lyric from beginning to end) I strongly recomend seeing the musical first... For those who love the musical, you can also read the story, it is written by Victor Hugo.
Free Music Review: The Best Les Miserables cast EVER! Hit: 5 Stars
First of all, I'd just like to say that "Les Miserables" is the best play that the world will ever know. It is amazing in every way and there's so much meaning in every word they sing. This cast is truly the most amazing one that has ever been and ever will be. Second of all, I'd like to say that I'm apalled at what people were saying about how Patti Lu Pone is a better Fantine than Randy Graff. That is absolutely untrue. Randy Graff is the best Fantine ever and there's so much soul brought into her performance. Her rendition of "I Dreamed A Dream" is absolutly amazing and it is much better than Patti Lu Pone's in my opinion. This is the best album of "Les Miserables" ever. The singers are amazing which is why they were the original Broadway cast. I strongly recommend this ablum because I know you will enjoy it immensly as I do.
Free Music Review: The Best Hit: 5 Stars
This version of Les Mis has such wonderful actors who portray their characters so well.Colm Wilkinson does a wonderful Jean Valjean. He is so interpretive and passionate and does his character very well. Terrence Mann is the PERFECT Javert. He is so angry and harsh, and a wonderful singer. Randy Graff is a good singer and does a good rendition of Fantine. Judy Kuhn is the BEST Cosette ever. I would but the cd just to hear her voice...It is beautiful. Frances Rufelle does Eponine much better that Lea Salonga. Eponine wasn't supposed to have a beautiful voice...She was supposed to sound almost drunk, according to Victor Hugo. David Bryant isn't the best Marius ever, but good. Michael Maguire is the perfect Enjolras. He is just wonderful...So passionate and angry! The only characters I don't like are the Thenardiers.
Free Music Review: MORE THAN A MUSICAL, AN OUTSTANDING MASTERPIECE Hit: 5 Stars
To describe LES MISERABLES as a simple musical seems to lack justice to a work of art difficult to surpass. I saw the Broadway show and I think it's the best show I've ever seen next to WEST SIDE STORY, A CHORUS LINE and THE KING AND I (I saw the 1887 revival). Even more, I would say that in a few years LM will be played in opera houses, such as it happens now with PORGY AND BESS. Actually, LM is that: a modern opera, brilliantly conceived with a score that takes your breath away. This soundtrack contains all the wonderful songs of the play and helps you revive the most electrifying dramatic moments of the story by Hugo. A monumental work, stunning music and inspired lyrics. A "must" not only for collectors and fans of B'way shows, but also for people who love music at its best. To give it 5 stars seems unfair: it deserves a special score.
