Opera favourite Lesley Garrett explores lots of great musical theatre material in this enjoyable album, A SOPRANO IN LOVE. No other genre has given the world quite so many beautiful love songs than the musical theatre stage. Here, Garrett runs the gamut from operetta gems (ROSE MARIE, THE NEW MOON), to classic Broadway (KISMET, KISS ME KATE) to a whole section of songs from PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and other Andrew Lloyd Webber scores.
Of the whole album, the PHANTOM OF THE OPERA segment is the most fun. Even when she recorded this album, Ms Garrett wasn't exactly Christine material, but it's a real pleasure to hear her perform this score. She's joined by Dave Willetts and Andrew C. Wadsworth (who both play their own unique variations of the Phantom), Chris Corcoran as Raoul and Meredith Braun as Meg (ironically Ms Braun has played Christine in the London production of the musical).
Garrett also adds her style and creamy vocals to the classics of the operetta repertoire; especially memorable are "Lover! Come Back to Me" from THE NEW MOON, "Love is Where You Find It" from THE KISSING BANDIT, and "Vilja" from THE MERRY WIDOW. Garrett is joined by Dave Willetts for several haunting selections from Bernard Taylor's problematic musical version of WUTHERING HEIGHTS ("You Were My First Love", "I See a Change in You", "I Belong to the Earth" and "He's Gone").
Silva Screen originally released this as a double disc set; Amazon only carries the single disc version which incorporates tracks from both discs. I'd try seeking out the double version. [SILKTV-CD4]
