Free Music Notes for Let Yourself GoFree Music Review: Kristin's got it all!!! Hit: 5 Stars
This CD will certainly be at or near the top of my list of best CDs issued this year. (It may well be AT the top, but since (I understand) Audra McDonald has a new one coming out this fall, Kristin may have to take second place.) While there are a couple of tracks that I do not particularly care for (most notably the duet with Jason Alexander), they don't detract from an otherwise stunning disc. Although Kristin's voice is not the most purely beautiful one around, it IS lovely. More importantly, she knows what to do with it. Her coloring of her tone and her phrasing demonstrate amazing intelligence and acting abilities. Her ballads could not be more exquisitely rendered. And some of her upbeat numbers even better reveal the range of her gifts. "The Girl in 14G" and "If" (my personal favorite track) are little plays in themselves. "The Girl in 14G" shows the hugeness of Kristin's technical abilities, encompassing opera and scat. And I don't think "If" has EVER been done better. I compared the performance by another of today's most gifted artists, Sally Mayes, with Kristin's and, unfortunately, Sally fell far short. This CD is a MUST HAVE for virtually any music lover.
Free Music Review: Pristine vocal prowess for classic, legendary songs Hit: 5 Stars
I can't remember when I *didn't* like Kristin Chenoweth. So when I heard she was going to have a solo CD out, I definitely wanted to add it to my collection. "Let Yourself Go" is what Chenoweth allows herself to do on this CD, and you get the fun of going along for the ride. The title song is an upbeat, fun number to dance around to in your living room. I also loved the songs "If", "Funny Valentine", "How Long Has This Been Going On?", "Hanging Around With You", "The Girl in 14G", "I'll Tell The Man In The Street", "He's Just An Ordinary Guy", and "On A Turquoise Cloud". Just about everything. My only quibble about the CD is the excessiveness of ballads. Don't get me wrong, I think the songs are beautiful, but they didn't just sing ballads in the 30's, 40's, and 50's. Whenever I play the CD in my car, I like to have more upbeat music going, and Chenoweth's CD seems to have slow song after slow song after slow song. Maybe for her next solo effort she could balance this up a little more. Otherwise, it is a must-have for anyone with an appreciation of not just musical theatre, but the era of days gone by.
Free Music Review: Turquoise Cloud Hit: 5 Stars
Kristin Chenoweth's first CD is a great set of show tunes that she nails in performance. The Irving Berlin title track opener is dazzling. Then she utterly amazes on Jules Styne's "If You Hadn't But You Did" with words that shoot out at super nova speed. The sentimental Rodgers & Hart tune "My Funny Valentine" from 1937's "Babes in Arms" shows her serious side and her ability to handle straight emotional material. "Hanging Around with You" with Jason Alexander is a comedy/character piece that puts a smile on your face, "Now it's a different story, you're not a one-girl man; I heard you're in glory playing the dapper Dan." Kurt Weill & Ogden Nash's "I'm A Stranger Here Myself" is delightfully campy with a song that was identified with Mary Martin. Duke Ellington's "On a Turquoise Cloud" sounds otherworldly with Chenoweth's high vocals floating wordlessly through the arrangement. The set ends with the uptempo swinger "Daddy" whose arrangement goes unapologetically show biz as Kristin adopts a coy & playful persona. "Let Yourself Go" is a timeless ode to Broadway that entertains superbly. Enjoy!
Free Music Review: The Cheno Strikes Again! Hit: 5 Stars
I completely and utterly LOVE THIS CD!!!!! Kristin is so amazing on this CD she completely blows me away. My favorite songs on this CD are: If, Daddy, Let Yourself Go, and Girl in 14G. Kristin truly shows off her talent on, especially on Girl in 14G.
In Girl in 14G she shows you her range and vocal ability by going from a Beautiful Operetta to a low Ella Fitzgerald sound. Kristin also shows great acting ability in this song. She really pulls it off.
I also love to dance so hearing the wonderful old dance songs like Let Yourself Go really make me enjoy this CD a lot.
I also enjoy Daddy, which I sang at a competition last year because I loved it so much.
If also is a fabulous song of which whenever I listen to the CD I play that song twice.
I give the Cheno a 100 percent on this CD. I really cannot wait to hear her next one that comes out in the spring!!!

Free Music Review: The Toppermost Poppermost Hit: 5 Stars
This recording has quickly sailed straight through the oceans of mediocrity and novelty and anchored right smack in my sea of love. It's my absolute favorite... I expected to like 2 or 3 songs on this CD and found that I truly LOVED them all. Kristen is a MUCH more talented singer than I'd expected... She has a range that I envy - and she avoids cheesy interpretation and annoying unknown selections. I didn't know most of the songs - but I've since become obsessed with locating some of these old recordings. The songs are fantastic - the singing is fantastic - and the Coffee Club Orchestra is AMAZING! The arrangements are quailty... This really gets you feeling very old movies - hair in loose curls - smoking gun- film noir! It really sets a mood. This is an absolute MUST for anyone who even remotely enjoys show music, movie music - or vocal performance. This really is a classy album!!!
