Free Music Review: Decent Follow Up To To A Big Throwdown

I'm sure LeVert were more than well aware that they'd have a hard time repeating the all around success they'd achieved with The Big Throwdown and I don't think they were trying. In terms of the type of music they were doing 1987 and 1988 could'nt be any more different. '88 was the year that hip-hop was in the throws of a huge commercial breakthrough and Don't Be Cruel and Guy were both showing us how to do the new jack swing. The uptempo tunes on this album do have that in mind here. Sure the kind of robotic shuffle of the backbeats on "Pull Over",the title track and "Gotta Get The Money" would,in a few years be part of a sound that was aging very quickly and hasn't 100% stood the test of time in terms of endurance over the passing years. But the amount of energy put into them was genuine and infectious and that's what keeps them from sounding like "old school new jack throwbacks" today. "Take Your Time" and the bonus track "Addicted To You" are better examples as a slower,funkier approch is used more in keeping with the go-go sound (itself a new jack precurser) that you'll find on songs such as EU's "Da Butt" around the same time frame. As a change of pace from the previous albums unusual approch to juxtaposition of tempo this follows the traditional formula of fast songs first,slow songs later. The second set of tunes showcase ballads such as "Let's Get Romantic","Start Me Up Again" and "Loveable",all of which again feature the trios excellent vocal harmonies and leads and great songwriting. "Join In The Fun" is the one uptempo song here that takes an 80's style funk/pop flavor to it and considering where music eventually went is somewhat less dated than the new jack styled material,even including a salsa style intro for good measure. This album doesn't quite have the same sense of adventure and uniqueness that their previous release possessed but it's one of a handfull of good contemporary R&B albums of even some of it's less timeless moments are very entertaining.
