Free Music Notes for Dirt Farmer

Free Music Review: Wonderful CD from a Real Class Act
Hit: 5 Stars

Levon Helm has survived throat cancer and has come back to create what in my view is the best cd by a solo member of The Band ever.
This sounds like a cross between the best of The Band and the best of the 'O' Brother, Where Art Thou' soundtrack.
Beautiful traditional songs soulfully sung by Levon with harmonies by his daughter Amy. Great songs such as Steve Earl's 'The Mountain' and Buddy and Julie Miller's classic-sounding 'Wide River to Cross'.
Just terrific.

Free Music Review: Good music Southeners can be proud of
Hit: 5 Stars

I spent the first 21 years of my life in Hot Springs, AR and eventhough most would probably consider me of "city folk" origin, I grew up workin my mom and dad's massive garden and listenin to The Band and other musicians with deep southern roots. This album Dirt Farmer rings true to my heart. Mainly due to the fact that I am in Grad School and am far away from anything fimilar. When I get to missin all the things about home i listen to this album and it instantly transports me back home. I just want to say thank you Mr. Helm for returnin to your roots. And I also would suggest that if you like the southern folk to pick up this album and give it a listen.

Free Music Review: Authentic Roots
Hit: 5 Stars

Levon's first studio release since who knows when is outstanding, but not Band-like. The 2007 Grammy winner for Best Traditional Folk Album this is a really rootsy album with fiddles, mandolins, and acoustic guitar all over it. The songs, whether recent or ancient, sound traditional. Some of these are songs Levon learned on the farm when he was a kid and his parents would sing them. But they all sound real, like he lived them and they're all brought to life by the wonderful production provided by Larry Campbell and Amy Helm.

Very highly recommended.

Free Music Review: Put the load right on me?
Hit: 2 Stars

I gave this to my brother who's an inveterate Band head, and he asked me if I wanted it back! However, as other reviewers have stated, this is not the Band, so when I receive it, I will make a first-hand judgement rather than second hand.

Free Music Review: Should be Bluegrass
Hit: 3 Stars

I thought I would be listening to some of the smooth old rock from the seventies yet every song that I listened to seemed very Blue Grass. Not that this is bad, I was just not expecting that. If you like that type of music then this is for you.
