Free Music Notes for Dirt FarmerFree Music Review: Levon is back and at his best Hit: 5 StarsI've had the CD for two months now, and I can't stop listening to it.
I thought we would never hear Levon's voice again. But it's back, and while it may not have the power it had before, it's still his distinctive southern drawl. He hasn't lost the ability to drum either. His drumming is just as good as it ever was. He also plays acoustic guitar on several songs, and as should be expected, plays mandolin on one song. I was surprised that it was just one song. But I guess there was no need for him to play more mandolin with the talented multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell, who plays most of the instruments heard on the album, taking over that duty. Levon's daughter, Amy, and Teresa Williams add beautiful vocal harmonies around Levon's voice. Amy also plays drums on two songs, and you can tell she was probably taught by her father.
The songs are mostly acoustic Traditional/Folk songs. That is a genre I never really had a taste for. But I enjoy listening to these songs. Levon does great interpretations of these traditional songs.
Not only is this the best solo album by a Band member, but in my opinion, is better than some of the 70's Band albums.
Free Music Review: Levon Helm is good as ever Hit: 5 StarsLevon Helm had vocal chord cancer and took a long time recovering, but he's back, and although his voice is slightly different, it's still him. The CD tends a little more to bluegrass/roots music but it is all done very well.
No, it's not The Band, but it's good music. Nice to hear his daughter on harmonies.
Free Music Review: Great American Fusion Hit: 5 StarsDirt Farmer
Thanks to Don Imus, we discovered this fantastic return of a great musician and vocalist. Levon Helm has been away far too long, but if this is the result, the wait has been worth it. In this collection of original works, he has interwoven so many genres of musical Americana, it is absolutely amazing! A great listen and a great trip through the multitude of possibilities inherent in American music.

Free Music Review: National treasure Hit: 5 StarsLevon has been a treasure since his days with Levon and the Hawks. Just the fact that he has recovered from throat cancer to make this album is a miracle. The Mountain and Wide River to Cross alone make this album worth the investment. This album is American music at its finest.
I compare this with Johnny Cashes final album in which you know they were both making music they truly loved not an album that the record company wanted.
Free Music Review: surprising songs of an American chant. Hit: 4 StarsI really like Levon Helms voice. The selections here give him a chance to be part of a time before the Band.
