I loved this CD, and I laughed my [...] off. Worth every penny. Lowlights include golfer jokes that aren't quite as good as George Carlin's, and some others I don't remember that lead to mere chuckles. But once he got into the holidays, I experienced huge laughter. I'm new to Black, so I can't compare this to any of his other work...but I'm a fan for life now.Free Music Review: lewis black - is great

I'm more a fan of Luther Burbank Performing Arts Center Blues and The End of the Universe than I am of this one. It just seems a bit less polished, and the energy level never really builds terribly high.
I think Black senses this, and near the end of the album he sort of apologizes for the turn his act has taken in the last year toward what he calls more depressing material. He's sort of joking as he says it, and I think sort of not, and it's good to acknowledge.
There are some funny bits here (especially on the loss of his virginity, vinyl albums, and a newspaper article on a blueberry pancake episode that Lewis reads to the audience)...but it's not a non-stop riot. I'm not sorry to have the CD, I just think he's done better work.
