Free Music Notes for I'll Be LightningFree Music Review: Joyful Misery!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Liam Finn recently admitted on a directv concert series that the album is largley about breakups. That being said don't let that stop you from checking this cool album out. To quote the movie waking life"At times of chaos in my life I like to go salsa dancing with my confusion". Liam doesn't wallow in self-pity like other break-up albums. He bravely navigates between mourning, exorcising, and even sarchism saying"Is there such a thing as love... or is it just a trick to procreate?"
You'll get more and more with each listen if you give it a chance. The obvious influences didn't bother me because I bought this without knowing he was even related to Neil Finn. Check out his concert on directv it's very interesting as he uses a loop pedal. It's very different and worth checking out!!! I'll be on the lookout for new material and will probably check out his previous band betchadupa!
Free Music Review: This is the stuff. Hit: 5 Stars
I just saw my second live show starring Liam & EJ, and I'm clearly super lucky to have seen the performances. But the even greater part is that the studio album lives up to the incredible and energetic live performances. I originally heard about Liam because I'm a big fan of his famous dad, but I feel confident had I heard some other way I would have cherished this album and every single amazing track on it.
But that's just the emotional/subjective aspect. The musicianship is fantastic, the harmonies inventive and the sound fresh. I like that the poppy songs aren't entirely unrelenting like, say, a Ted Leo record (and I like Ted Leo) but you also get some varied dynamics, the slow and the fast, the loud and soft.
If you can, catch the live show. If you can't, the album will thrill you anyways.
Free Music Review: No need to mention the obvious Hit: 5 Stars
Like many others here, I had heard Liam live before I picked up this album. He was nothing short of a phenomenon in concert. His talent as a solo musician is staggering.
You don't need that experience to hear the quality of his studio work. His songwriting is as sharp as a knife -- and surprisingly diverse. "Fire in Your Belly," an almost surreal ballad with spare lyrics, and "Lead Balloon" are two of the best tracks on the album in spite of being poles apart musically.
This album has the lovely, up-close feeling of sitting in someone's garage and listening to Liam play with a couple of friends. It's a little unpolished in spots, but the overall sound actually benefits from it. One of the best new musicians I've heard in a long time.
Free Music Review: ....Opened for Eddie Vedder, WOW! Hit: 5 Stars
I just had the pleasure of witnessing this unbelieveable phenom - well maybe not so unbelieveable....BUT as an opening act (for Ed Vedder - Santa Cruz, CA 4/5/08) you do expect some good tunes as a warm up for the crowd BUT never, have I ever seen someone with so much chili pepper in their gut as Mr Liam Finn. The way his musical explorations exploded onto stage that night - stole my heart!
I think it started for me when his voraciousness tore a hole through his snare - & the man continued on like a true gentleman playing anything BUT music for gentleman! What a champ.....
AND - and....the music IS like LIGHTING. Enjoy.
Free Music Review: Simply a Fantastic Album Hit: 5 Stars
Liam Finn, at the early age of twenty-four, follows in his father's footsteps (Neil Finn of Crowded House). This is his solo debut, previously he was the front man for Betchadupa, an Auckland band I like a lot. There's no doubt critics and fans are going to compare him to his father, Neil, because the similarities are definitely there especially with the vocals.
This album is filled with Liam's sweet falsetto vocals. If you like Crowded House, then you'll love the songs here, like "Remember When" and "Second Chance". Who knows, maybe Liam might even surpass his family legacy.
