Free Music Review: A folk jam to sing with
Hit: 5 Stars

I bought this title a little over a year ago in my favorite CD store. It was a real gem! "Hit The Bottom" always reminds me of walking up a mountain in the New England winter, wishing I was back in my warm room with a cup of hot chocolate. "One" is a lyrical joyride, and listening to "Coup D'Etat" you just can't help but dance. Billy Jonas is definitely on the top of my list of artists waiting to be discovered... but secretly, I just want to keep him as my little secret. Definitely a good discovery, and an artist I'll stay loyal to as long as he keeps on playin' that water cooler and singin' those twirling whilrpool lyrics...

Free Music Review: Love it!

I have seen Billy Jonas several times in Asheville with my two kids and hisband. He is absolutely fabulous. So much fun. The CD is great.

This CD is great. It is a bit quirky. There's a lot of different noises and instuments used. For example, in the last song (it lasts something like 14 minutes, I believe) he tells his life story and philosophy and there's a choir of African singers that sounds tribal or something, and other strange sounds throughout. It's mostly about rhythm and the stories he tells with lyrics. The attitude he conveys with his songs is acceptance. He seems like a hippy, but the best kind-his songs just convey this love of people. It's really wonderful.

My favorite tracks are "Hit the Bottom" (about sadness, but the melody is really upbeat and cheerful) "The Bus" about his experiences and the people he meets traveling cross-country, "God Is In" for the great philosophy behind it and "Sleeping" because it's sweet and sexy at the same time.

A warning, however - this is most definitely an adult album, although the attitude is one of child-like trust. If you have young kids they probably won't even realize it, though. In "Late" the premise is that he's set the alarm "45 minutes early" and "the next 45 are for you" and "you know we'll stop when you say 'no'" so I assume he's talking about sex. Also, "God Is In" might offend some people. The philosphy is that God is everywhere, which I find beautiful, but contains ideas like "God is in the atheists, sayin' 'yeah I don't exist' God is in the dancing pagans, each drop of perspiration" I don't know. This might be distrubing to some people.

"Sleeping" is great, check out these lines: "Our bodies lay like notes sustained - we're sleeping together/The warmest chord I've ever heard - sleeping together" but it really is just about sleeping spoon style. Very sweet.

I highly recommend this CD. It's very hopeful and loving. Makes you forget about the genocide in Sudan, political persecution in China, Israel/Palestine conflict, etc. (at least for a little while)

Enjoy!

Free Music Review: Hit the Bottom
Hit: 5 Stars

One of the only people I've have heard that can write a positive song about being depressed. Quriky and insightful. It will make you feel better about the ironies of day to day life..

Free Music Review: Is good songwriting out of style?
Hit: 5 Stars

Billy Jonas is an amazing songwriter...O.K. so he's a little wordy, but the words are great...If i had to describe it, and classify it (reluctantly) i'd say he was the demon child of David Byrne and Harry Nilsson. Wordplay is exuberantly utilizied, (ya' gotta' listen...) it will do yur heart good... Not to mention the musicianship is inspired... beautiful stuff. For the highly original rhythmz, Billy likes to use "found" objects in his work, (repercussion)... Songs like "God is In" (Goddess in, God is Zen, gotta' sin?) exemplify the wordplay. 'Hit the Bottom" is the only "positive" (and very funny, as well as insightful) song I've ever heard about being depressed... Could go into length about how his tuneship has inspired me but i diygeresssss... I have played this record for many folks, and the question is always, "so who is this?" if you're missing and wondering where the songwriters are, look no further...
