Free Music Review: Not quite the debut, but still impressive
Hit: 4 Stars

The long-awaited sophomore effort by pop-rockers Lifehouse is something you will definitely want to listen to. Yes, we all remember the hooks that got us addicted to songs like "Hanging by a Moment" and "Only One". So much, in fact, that I would constantly tell myself that these guys were going to have to work very hard to top No Name Face (which, because of both my musical taste and place-specific circumstances, has become one of my all-time favorite albums). After listening to Stanley Climbfall, I have decided that, although they didn't reach the same level that their debut did on an emotional level, they certainly aspired to new musical heights.

No Name Face was a compilation of songs, woven to melancholic perfection by soothing guitars, catchy choruses and singer Jason Wade's baritone intonation. Songs like "Sick-Cycle Carousel", "Simon", "Breathing" and "Somewhere in Between" would constantly remind us of the never-ending chases, the fights we couldn't win, and the stars we could never reach. In other words, they were irresistibly sad songs. Stanley Climbfall does have its Face-esque songs, notably the title-track "Stanley Climbfall", "Out of Breath", and its sensitive rocker anthem "Take Me Away". On the whole, however, it seems that Wade and company want to rock at their next shows. I keep imagining them playing "Trying" live, and seeing the crowd in tears. I guess they wanted the audience to get more energetic, thus Climbfall's appearance.

Songs like "Out of Breath" will no doubt remind you of "Only One", as "Spin" tries to be the new "Hanging by a Moment". I would have preferred that they stick with what they do best. But in all seriousness, Climbfall is a very good album. They haven't exactly changed their sound, nor have they decided to clone their previous effort. They are going just where they need to be: ahead.

The tears will keep flowing though, as Wade continues with these songs: "I keep waiting for the day when I'm with you". If you liked the previous album, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Recommendations: "Am I Ever Gonna Find Out", "Stanley Climbfall", "Out of Breath", "Just Another Name", "Take me Away"

Free Music Review: A bit of a mess (2 and a half stars)
Hit: 3 Stars

(2 and a half stars) I was a fan of "No Name Face", but was ready for something completely different. And that's what I got. Although not in the way I thought it would be. It's still evident that Wade is a good songwriter, but the musicianship in muddied at times and the vocals are weak. There are a few really great tracks (Sky is Falling), some mediocre ones, and some plain old bad ones. I listened to this several times, hoping it would grow on me, but it just never did. Here's to hoping Lifehouse takes their time putting out CD #3 and captures our imaginations again.

Free Music Review: Buy it, buy it, buy it
Hit: 5 Stars

I'm going to try and keep this short, so I'll just start by saying that this is one of the best albums I own--and I own a lot. Whereas with "No Name Face" there were always tracks I could skip over to get to the better ones, such is simply not the case with "Simon Climbfall." The title track itself is all strange and blissful sadness, and when Jason Wade writes lyrics like "living just to make it through another day," it sticks with you. So many of us think that, and yet no one ever really says it, at least aloud. He's a wonderful songwriter.

Other standouts (must I pick?) are "Wash," "Just Another Name," "Take Me Away," and "Spin." The band is truly adept in writing music that is more an experience, rather than just clever wording or hooky bass riffs; I believe they accomplish this with actual MELODY and what must be a very good knowledge of composition, in order to turn in and around those beautiful resolutions the way they do.

While there's no mistaking that this music is the product of Lifehouse, I see growth and greater collaboration among the members themselves. When artists fail to grow with each album, they are accused of not doing anything different, not maturing. When they do mature, however, people will inevitably complain that "it's just not like their first one." I believe that artistic growth is much more important than the bottom line, and while I'm very disappointed that this album sold so relatively few copies, I'm glad there was little artistic sacrifice. Here's hoping they come out with their next one soon, and that the masses will rediscover how truly gifted and real these guys are.

Free Music Review: Climbfall Falls Flat
Hit: 2 Stars

Being a huge fan of the great craftsmanship that went into their previous album "No Name Face", Stanley Climbfall could not compete in the least.

The songwriting was very dull, the production boring, and the album continuity flat. Nothing of the great creativity that went into songs such as Everything and Breathing.

Not worth the money. Better luck next time to Lifehouse.
