Free Music Notes for Like, Omigod! The '80s Pop Culture Box (Totally)Free Music Review: Totally Awesome!!! Hit: 5 StarsIt was absolutely wonderful! It covers everything you'd want to hear from the 80s. LOVE IT-LOVE IT-LOVE IT!!!
Free Music Review: Like, Omigod! I can't believe I bought this for $90! Hit: 3 StarsLike all compilations, no one will find it complete. There's always going to be something missing. Unfortunately, this compilation seems to be missing some of the best artists during that decade. Nothing from Michael Jackson, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Pat Benatar, Heart, Olivia Newton-John, Luther Vandross, David Bowie, etc. Instead, what you get is approximately 60% great music and the rest is basically garbage. They should have marketed this compilation with a small booklet, instead of the fancy package, and charge half the price. It's like buying a Corvette with a 4-cylinder engine. Looks great, poor performance.
Free Music Review: annoying mix; some production problems Hit: 1 StarsIf this boxed set were offered DURING the 80's, it would be a great value. But not now. And especially not with the mix that they tossed together. Only about 40% of the music in this set could be called primo material. This includes the stalwarts Asia, Duran Duran, etc. Then there is the "junk". A star wars melody. Pac Man Fever. Some obscure songs that I have never heard of before (and I listened to the radio a lot back then). A very un-funny comedy rap track called General Hospi-tale. Something unrecognizable from Tracy Ullman, the comedian. And the scariest of all, You Look Marvelous, a sad rap from Billy Crystal. Very unwelcome stuff.
The producers of this work clearly knew what they were doing. They evenly scattered the crap among the good stuff as if they were cherries on a cake, so that you couldn't just throw four of the seven CDs in the trash, you had to manually intervene or face listening to it all.
But where is Michael Jackson? Where is Madonna? Van Halen? U2? They're not here. Why? Probably because they couldn't afford the licensing on that music, if it were even available. So they bring you Don Johnson (not a hit, more like a curiosity, from the Miami Vice star). You get Taco. And... Trio. Yes, Trio. Wait a minute, that song burst onto the scene (and vaporized almost as fast) in 1997! Well, actually I had to do some research but apparently it came out in 1982, but was only known in Germany. A Volkswagen advertisement introduced it to the U.S. in 1997 and it made some airtime. But hey, if they can get the license then throw it on.
To make matters worse, some of the tracks do not sound right. We're Not Gonna Take It, in particular, was severely messed up. I had to adjust the equalizer significantly to make it sound right, but then set it back when the song was over. Can you imagine having to do that repeatedly in your car or at a gathering of friends?
I think this box set speaks volumes about what is wrong with the music industry. Fortunately we have the tools today to remix our own media and remove all the junk. So when you're done, you can take your three (not 7) remastered CDs of the 80's... well, I guess you'll have to go looking for your own missing tracks... and enjoy them without being interrupted by other junk.
Free Music Review: I'm So Excited ... Hit: 5 StarsYou can never go wrong with *anything* by Rhino. Everything they put together is completely amazing. So when I found this 80's set I was so excited and not at all surprised that it was put together by this amazing company.
I was looking for a package like this forever. I love everything about The 80's and I wanted all of the hits from this decade.
There are 7 CD's and about 72 songs by the original artists! Plus it comes with a Pop Culture 80's book complete with pictures!
Favorite Songs: Video Killed The Radio Star, 9 To 5, General Hospi-Tale, Jessie's Girl, Tainted Love, Mickey, Sweet Dreams, Girls Just Want To Have Fun, Maniac, I'm So Excited, Let's Hear It For The Boy, Ghostbusters, Footloose, Take On Me, Don't You Forget About Me, Weird Science, Addicted To Love, Rhythm Of The Night, Walk Like An Egyptian, If You Leave, Walk This Way, Don't Dream It's Over, Only In My Dreams, La Bamba, Right Here Waiting For You, & Roam.
Some favorite and popular 80's artists that are missing are: Madonna, Paula Abdul, Tiffany, Jon Bon Jovi, R.E.M., Aerosmith, Wilson Phillips, Pat Benatar, and more. The only thing I can think of is that these artists wanted them to be released on their own albums.
Other wise it's worth the money! I play this collection all of the time and my mom even enjoys and remembers a lot of these songs. This collection is a must and will have you walking on sunshine!
