Free Music Notes for Like, Omigod! The '80s Pop Culture Box (Totally)Free Music Review: The MOTHER of all 80's boxed sets! Hit: 5 StarsI would like to personally thank every person at Rhino Records who worked on this "totally awesome" 80's set. They ignored all the big names (Madonna, Prince, Janet Jackson et al) and focused mainly on the B-List celebs of the skinny tie decade. I'm sure none of the afore mentioned would ever greenlight their tunes to a best of set, and for that I am truly grateful.
Lets start with Disc 1: The heavily rotated staples of early 80's are all here. Queen, Christopher Cross, The Cars. But what is also here is the gems that only those who lived the 80's remember. Empire Strikes Back medley, General Hospi-tale (!!!) and the very first MTV video aired, Video Killed The Radio Star!
Disc 2 moves a year or two later and again, the usual suspects make a command appearance: Billy Idol, .38 Special, Hall & Oats. And again, those rare gems: Greatest American Hero theme song, Genius of Love, and my personal favorite, Valley Girl!!!
Disc 3 is very brit pop heavy. Duran Duran, Thompson Twins, and The Human League all lend a hand for your remeniscing pleasure. Puttin On The Ritz ends the disc with tongue-in-cheek class and sophistication.
Disc 4 is a bit more radio "friendly". Jeopardy, She Blinded Me With Science, and Karma Chameleon all revive themselves nicely but the true jewel in disc 4's crown: Der Kommissar!
Disc 5 is a little more R&B and a little more Rock. Yes, Styx, and Foreigner all flood high school memories back and Tracey Ullman's They Don't Know takes the edge off this rock heavy disc.
Disc 6 is very pop/dance. Animotion, Simple Minds, and Dead Or Alive remind us of American Bandstand's cheesy dance scenes and Billy Crystal is on hand for commentary. One word.. Marvelous.
This magnificent collection wraps up on disc 7 with lots of girl-group fun. The Bangles, Bananarama, and the B-52's. Not to fear, Debbie ummm... I mean DEBORAH Gibson chimes in to finish an 80's collection i thought was Only In My Dreams.
If that isn't enough, a totally tubular 90 page book chock full of facts and tidbits guides you song by song through the entire collection including what postion each song reached and the release date of each track!
You won't find a better time capsul of 80's music if you tried, and believe me, i have tried!
Free Music Review: Wicked Hit: 4 StarsI sing for a cover band and we use these tunes all the time! Disc 4 is my current favorite. I don't give it a 5 because I think Rhino could have used more popular tunes from some of the artists - for example, when I think of Debbie Gibson (which believe me, isn't often), I think Lost In Your Eyes, but Only In My Dreams is on disc 7. And there's NO Talking Heads, NO Springsteen, NO Mellencamp...they say 80s to me, but I guess not to Rhino. They pulled it off alright, though I'd rather replace some of the fluff (Deniece Williams, Billy Crystal (ugh), Melissa Manchester (ugh again) with any of the above-named artists. There's more good than bad though and I really enjoy listening and performing most of these tunes.
Free Music Review: The 80's collection to have! Hit: 5 StarsThis is the only set you need :) This well pacakged set of 7 CD's even includes a fairly thick booklet of happenings and events from the 80's.
Great for a trip down memory lane. The audio quality was quite good as well.
I'd looked at several other sets of 80's music, but I'm very glad I got this one. It was well worth the money spent!
Free Music Review: Omigod! more than 5 stars! Hit: 5 Starseven though the price is a bit high(asit should be) this cd will always remind you of those happy times back in the 80s. I grew up(so im not really a kid)in that decade with this music and i've always looked for the perfect box set containing all of my favorites. Finally, here it is!!
Buy it. you will feel the same way
(and i'm even a kid!! lol!)
Free Music Review: Some Hard To Find Hits Hit: 5 StarsThis is an awesome retrospective of the 80's top 40 music sound. I would like to point out a few things not mentioned in the other reviews. This 7 disc set has all of the single/45RPM versions of all the hits. Like the hard to find single versions of Styx-Mr. Roboto, The Fixx-One Thing Leads To Another, John Waite-Missing You, Debbie Gibson-Only In My Dreams, Kenny Loggins - Footloose as well as other hard to find original single releases. Most 80's hits packages have the standard album versions because they are easier to find. So, hats off to Rhino Records for finding these songs as I heard them on 45RPM record back in the 80's. I'm sure that it also made it easier to fit more songs on each of the discs. The sound quality is perfect. A personal standout favorite of mine is the very rare and hard to find song by Martin Briley - The Salt In My Tears from 1983. I don't think that this hit has shown up on any other 80's collection prior to this one.
As for the reason there is no Madonna, Michael Jackson, Billy Joel, Talking Heads or Bruce Springsteen in this collection... Rhino needs to have the permission from the lables who own the master tapes to put them in an 80's collection. I'm sure that if Rhino could get those rights, they'd have some of the above artists mentioned included in this collection. It's all about money and copyrights.
It would have been nice to see some of the other hits by artists like Rick Springfield. Is it some kind of law that every 80's collection has to have Jesse's Girl on it? What about I've Done Everything For You. Or, Find Another Fool by Quarterflash. And Billy Chrystal's You Look Marvelous? Wouldn't Juice Newton's Queen Of Hearts have been a better choice? It was a #1 hit. But all in all, this is a very very good collection of hits from the 80's. These are all the original hits as you remember them. NO RERECORDS in this package. So, if you loved the top 40 radio of the 80's. You will not go wrong with this collection of pop and rock memories from the "big" decade.
P. S.
The booklet is also outstanding!
