Free Music Review: Boulanger Songs get excllent performance

If you are a fan of the works of this wonderful French female composer cut down by TB well before she had achieved what might have been her finest work, you will welcome this excellent recital of her songs. She was the first woman to win the Prix de Rome and studied composition with her sister Nadia as well as that doyen of the m?lodie, Gabriel Faur?. Because of her short life span (1893-1918) there are not a great number of works; her large choral works have recently been recorded in stunning performances conducted by John Eliot Gardener, and this CD makes a significant contribution to her songs. In particular, Jean-Paul Fouch?court's reading of the song cycle "Clearings in the Sky" was a real revelation. I have three other recordings of this cycle but this one tops all the others in terms of vocal technique and interpretaive insight.

Lili Boulanger, who died in 1918 at age 24, was a great composer, and her few works are precious. Clearings in the Sky is a song cycle depicting with amazing insight a young man's sorrow at a failed love affair. Its beautiful melodies are supported by an adventurous harmonic background. Jean-Paul Fouch?court has the perfect light French tenor and just the right expression for this moving music. The three little piano pieces are lovely miniatures, and as for the four songs, they may never have been recorded before. Beaufort sounds slightly plummy and querulous, but only slightly. Alain Jacquon plays magnificently throughout. With complete texts and translations, this disc is a treasure. --Leslie GerberClassical Music CDs
