Free Music Notes for Lilith Fair: A Celebration Of Women In Music, Volume 2

Free Music Review: Fair ladies turn up the girl power!
Hit: 4 Stars

When the first estrogen-fueled Lilith tour rolled out two summers ago, it was in flagrant violation of an unwritten law of concert promotion: An all-female bill was doomed to fail. Canadian performer Sarah McLachlan's Lilith Fair proved 'em wrong and turned out to be the biggest touring festival of '97.

Folks couldn't help noticing, however, that Lilith was not only all-female but almost all-white as well and heavily laden with guitar-strumming and angst-baring singer-songwriters. So the 1998 edition added funk to the mix, as evidenced on both of these companion discs. The follow-ups to the 1997 tour-highlights album (released last year), Vols. 2 and 3 showcase the 1998 Fair's more ethnically diverse and musically muscular lineup. Vol. 2 features powerhouse performances by Sinéad O'Connor, Queen Latifah, Tracy Bonham and Holly McNarland. McLachlan teams up with Emmylou Harris on a hymnlike "Angel," Shawn Colvin puts oomph into her ode "New Thing Now," and Natalie Merchant contributes a soul-tinged version of Elvis's hit "In the Ghetto." Sold separately, Vol. 3 features some of the acts, including McLachlan, who will be on hand for the upcoming third (and final) Lilith tour. Here, the quieter performers like Harris, Suzanne Vega and the Indigo Girls are joined by rockers like Luscious Jackson, Liz Phair, Holly Cole, Me'Shell Ndegéocello, Bonnie Raitt and newly minted teen faves Sixpence None the Richer.

Free Music Review: Diversity and great song-writing
Hit: 4 Stars

What do you get when you put so many wonderful singer-songwriters onto one bill? You get Lilith Fair and you get these two new volumes. They are such a treat to listen to. Individually, I've been a fan of Sarah's, Bonnie Rait, Natalie Merchant, and others for several years. Lilith Fair has exposed me to a much greater range of lesser known, but equally talented artists. There are some great moments on this CD; this version of "Angel" transported me to another place; and "In the Getto" by Natalie as a new one to me. Treat yourself and get this album, I know I don't regret the decision.

Free Music Review: It grows on you
Hit: 4 Stars

I wrote a review for this CD several months ago, saying I didn't like it apart from a few songs. After that, I put the CD away. I recently brought it out again, put it in the CD player, and realized "Hey, there's some good stuff on here." I didn't like it at first. Now I love it. If you are wanting to try some Lilith Fair, my advice would be to borrow this from someone... Listen to the whole thing a few times, even if you don't like it the first time. For some odd reason, it just grows on you till you are playing it nonstop.

Free Music Review: You feel as if it's the summer of 98' all over again!
Hit: 4 Stars

This is the better of the two. With the exception of Sarah on volume 3. You really must hear "Black & White" It is beautiful!!! These two are just the ticket to get geared up fot this final year of Lilith. :(

Free Music Review: Nice
Hit: 3 Stars

To be honest, I wouldn't have gotten this CD if it wasn't for 'Angel' and 'I Do,' the only songs on here that I have heard. I was introduced to some more Natalie Merchant, which was nice. This version of 'Angel' is wonderful. I love the extra piano parts. Personally, I think Sarah doesn't need anyone to sing with her, and (don't jump on me for saying this) I think it would have been better without Emmylou. But it is great. 'I Do' is even better live. The only other song on here that I really liked was 'In the Ghetto,' but I do want to get the other Lilith Fair CDs just so I can hear some other Sarah McLachlan songs live. Okay, sorry for rambling: the bottom line is that most of the songs on here are not very much like Sarah McLachlan, so if you are, like me, a Sarah fan that just wanted to check out some other female singers in that genre... I wouldn't recommend Lilith Fair Vol. 2.
