Maybe I'm too much of a male Chauvinist, but I was never very interested in the various Lilith Fairs. However, for some reason I picked up this CD (at the library - OK I'm cheap) and gave it a listen. It's really quite good overall, albeit a bit uneven. I've listened to it for a while now and it wears quite well.

The Editorial Review above says "Many of the artists give performances that eclipse their studio work" and that's certainly true for Joan Osborne. Her "Ladder" is definitely one of the best live performances I've ever heard. She's a great singer and she had a helluva band backing her up that day. (BTW, one of the other great live songs is "Naked Eye" by Luscious Jackson on Lilith vol. 3.)

Other particularly good songs on this CD are: "Sur Tes Pas" - Autour De Lucie; "I Want" - Dayna Manning; "Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner" - September 67; "Cain" - Patty Griffin; "I Don't Want To Think About It" - Wild Strawberries. I hadn't heard anything by any of these artists before, so I consider this quite a find.

In sum, a nice double CD with a nice range of unique works. As of this writing, it's available as "new" for $3.34 + s/h! Definitely worth it.

I really enjoyed this CD for the most part. I always fast forward over Paula Cole's Mississippi, and Sur Tes Pas and a couple of others, but for the most part, it's a really excellent collection if you appreciate folksy music. I really enjoy Susanna Hoff's new version of Eternal flame, and Meridith Brooks and the Indigo Girl's song on here is good music when you're angry...I also really enjoyed Tara McLean's song Hold Me Jordan...and of course the Water is Wide...I also really liked Suzanne Vega's song on here...very spiritual and uplifting album on the whole...but I wondered why artists like Carol King, Alanis Morrisett and Tori Amos aren't on the tracks? Anyhow, generally thought it was money well spent, and I can't wait for lilith 2 and three! I wish sarah would do more..I heard this is going to be her last one.

My favorites are Been It by the Cardigans, Falling in Love by Lisa Loeb, Eternal Flame by Susanna Hoffs, Building a Mystery by Sarah McLachlan, and What Do You Hear In These Sounds by Dar Williams. You already know at least two of them, though not in these live versions. Been It sounds like past life regression to me, about all the relationships she's been to him. Falling in Love says "the time between meeting and finally leaving is sometimes called falling in love", so it's a sad song about separating. What Do You Hear In These Sounds is about visiting a shrink (if you start to run dry, try the other parent). Susanna and Sarah are two of my favorites. Jewel doesn't do her own song on the album, but teams with others on one.

Free Music Review: Superb live work!

Really a good cd!! there are a lot of great live performances here! Suzanna Hoffs acoustic performance of Eternal Flame is beautifull. Ohter favourites of me: Falling In Love from Lisa Loeb, Rock In This Pocket from Suzanne Vega, Building A Mistery from Sarah Mclachlan, Hold Me Jordan from Tara Mclean, and Going Back To Harlam from Emmylou Harris. But the best song is ofcourse Mississippi from Paula Cole. What a voice!! I really like the part when she yells to the climax of the song and releases that great height is her voice. Really, only for that song I would buy this cd!
