Free Music Review: Best of Lillian Axe? They're all the best!

This is kind of an odd compilation. I suppose I see why a "best of" Lillian Axe album is necessary, but to be perfectly honest Lillian Axe is one of those rare bands whose catalog is so impressive that coming up with a mere 10-11 "best" tracks is damn near impossible. If you tried to come up with the ideal late 80's hard rock/hair metal album that brought together the absolute best elements of that whole scene, it would sound an awful lot like Lillian Axe.
Anyway, what Out of the Darkness, Into the Light does is capture 5 songs from the self titled Lillian Axe debut and 6 tracks from the band's second album Love and War. Again, this is mystifying because each of those albums is a completely perfect slice of melodic rock. Still, it's hard to fault the song selection when the songs they chose are so good. You have to wonder why they totally neglected the excellent Psychoschizophrenia and Poetic Justice, which were released around the same time.
In the end, I just can't see how this compilation is supposed to be effective. Are there people who are casually interested in this band who might just want a best of comp? I've yet to meet anyone (who had heard of Lillian Axe) that wasn't a major fan. I suppose this would work for new fans, but even they are going to be better served by the excellent Metal Mind reissues of Lillian Axe and Love and War.
