Free Music Notes for Lime - Greatest Hits

Free Music Review: lime...and then some!!
Hit: 5 Stars

the major hits are all here, but in a remixed form, but don't let that stop you from enjoying these classics!! the grooves are still there, more here for dancing on the dance floor, though...i actually found this cd at a used cd shop a few days ago for only 5 bucks, which is a surprise on 2 fronts:1. i didn't expect to see this cd just in a random used store, and, 2. this cd is usually around the 10-15 dollar range, so buying this for 5 bucks is basically a steal!! "guilty", "angel eyes", "unexpected lovers", "come and get your love", and "babe, we're gonna love tonite" are still excellent sounding in remixed form, and for what it's worth, a little remixing for a legendary group such as lime ain't so bad after all....right? i thought so!! enjoy!!

Free Music Review: Love their music
Hit: 4 Stars

I love their music. It took me way back. Back into time. i was pleased with the CD. Wish they would have kept the original edits in the CD, and added the remixes of all the songs, instead of just the remixes, but that is nit picking.

Free Music Review: Babe, You're Gonna Love This CD...Tonite
Hit: 4 Stars

...Or any other night if you love great Euro sounding disco/dance. Lime is a surprising dance act consisting of a husband and wife team that wrote and recorded songs nearly as catchy as those by Abba. Sadly, they never got to nearly the same level of chart success. Still, songs like "Angel Eyes", "Your Love" and "Babe, We're Gonna Love Tonite" (note he eighties spelling) have hooks so spare, are dancable fun, and very well crafted, lyrically and musically. The songs are also not always typical electronic disco. "Angel Eyes" sort of takes a stab at hip-hop (and keep in mind, this is 1983) and "A Man and A Woman" is a nice slow dance song with heavy keyboards (what else would you expect) but also surprisingly a guitar solo.

So why haven't most people even heard of Lime? I have to admit being kind of stubborn about listening to them. The album artwork is some often stylized paintings of beautiful women using very eighites colors and themes (in most photos, they are drinking something bright green...a lime drink, I suppose) but they didn't catch my attention enough to bother to listen to even samples. I used to see their discs pop up while looking at recommendations and I had no idea what Lime was....I figured it was a group but certainly more than two people (I also figured it was more American sounding for some reason...I had no idea). Then one day, I caught them on the radio and was hooked. Actually, I probably caught them on the radio before but just wasn't in the mood. But the song I heard was called "Babe, You're Gonna Love Tonite" and it was this disco song with a strong electronic keyboard intro with a back and forth vocal exchange between a man and woman. It was so catchy. Then I heard other tracks like "Guilty" and that's fitting because the songs are guilty pleasures. They are not high art but they are simply fun pop.

So this is a great discovery and I hope fans of dance pop that are not aware of Lime give this CD a chance. It's a great sampling that includes nearly all their songs that hit on the US chart (shockingly missing is a full version of "You're My Magician" off their first album, although it might have only been considered the b-side to "Your Love"). Still, it might have been nice if the song selection would have gotten into their later albums (they made music up until 1991's "Caroline") but I suppose the compilation producers knew what they were doing (this appears to be a collection that came out on Unidisc after not only their glory days but after they reissued their entire catalog on CD). Also, I've read that later on, the group lost interest in Lime and started to shift even more duties off, including production.

Furthermore, there is another catch that keeps me from giving this four stars. The songs are dated by the signature eighties keyboards and the fact that it is disco pop but that's to be unexpected since that is true of most 80's dance pop. Even that could be forgiven by fans. What might not is the fact that Denis and Densye LePage, the songwriters and performers....how do I say this? Remember how I compared them to Abba in the early part of the review. Well, they are alike in the type of hooky pop and the fact that it's a husband/wife set (only one set compared to two) that would later break up and this makes them similar to the Swedish supergroup (Lime are Canadian). Let's just say they are not Frida and Agentha when it comes to vocals. Actually, that's not even fair since people do not brag or whince about Abba as vocalists. Let's say this....on one end of the spectrum when it comes to disco vocalists is Donna Summer, who has a very strong singing voice when not experimenting on those early Belotte-Morder disco records....on the other end. Even fans can't disagree. Apparently, Denis and Denyse would not tour or appear as Lime in public (Joy Dorris and Chris Marsh would take over). Not sure if that was a Milli Vanilli type deal since it was clearly Denis and Denyse singing on the record and getting credit for writing and production when appilcable (the names Chris and Joy do not appear anywhere on this disc...perhaps they did take over vocals on the later records). It is claimed that Joy and Chris took over because they were younger and more attractive. Whatever the case, I have no idea what Chris and Joy sounded like but Lime on the record is not known for great vocals. However, there is a strange kind of passion in both their voice. When Denis opens up "Babe..." with "They said I was a loser...", the voice doesn't make you doubt it but there is this strange empathy you feel for his unsoulful, rough vocal. Even crazier is Denyse's vocal, which is so incredibly high and out of control, you're shocked. She probably released her limited vocal ability since the only song solely credited by her as a writer, "Take It Up", only features Denis on vocals. But there is even something about her vocal that is compelling and when they sang together, often about love, it was nice. So they are won't be winning awards for vocals but you can't argue with the craftsmanship of these awesome pop songs. It more than makes up for weak vocals. The group is beloved by classic dance fans and will hopefully live on in years to come through these songs.
