Free Music Review: A Great Rock CD
Hit: 5 Stars

I have given this album several listens and decided that it's good after all. This is actually more of a straightforward rock album than rap/metal. If Chocolate Starfish was their fun, cheesy record, then this is their mature album. Well, about as mature as Limp Bizkit can get. After all, the worst thing these guys could ever do is grow up.

1. Re-Entry - This intro is cool, it has some kind of ringmaster yelling, "Step right up and hear the most ferociously soothing waves of sonic communication ever created." It also kind of shows Fred's bitterness when he says, "Whether you are good or bad, happy or sad, an emotional wreck, or a blissful speck in this black hole of an existence we call life." After the skit, a pointless two-line song plays, where all Fred says is, "All around the world, you know me. All around the world, we know you." 7/10

2. Eat You Alive - "Okay" is the word. Bad choice for a first single, I think it gives the wrong impression of the CD. 5/10

3. Gimme the Mic - YES! Now, this is what I wish he had released as a single. This has a much more metallic, energetic, go-for-the-throat Three Dolla Bill vibe to it. Great, aggressive lyrics. One of the top three songs. 10/10

4. Underneath the Gun - Second-best ballad on the album! Great song with great lyrics like, "Stress is tremendous and pressure is endless/no one on this planet like me to be friends with/I'm underneath the sun/I'm underneath the gun." Almost made it into the top three songs, but "Build a Bridge" is slightly better. 10/10

5. Down Another Day - Another great ballad, this one is weird. This does not sound like Limp Bizkit at all; it talks about seasons changing and death. It's really deep, and I can't help but think that he's talking about the death of Nu-metal and the change in music. "All great things go away/everything's gonna change again." 10/10

6. Almost Over - Too many ballads in a row! This is probably the worst one, but it's still somewhat good. It's a trip into Fred's past, and he talks about teenage angst, and growing up and becoming a man. It's cool but not that special. 5/10

7. Build a Bridge - The BEST power ballad on the album, hands down! This has the some of the deepest lyrics on the album. Incredible melody! One of the top three songs. 10/10

8. Red Light-Green Light - This is the hip-hop track with Snoop Dogg. Yes, I know that everyone is ripping on this one because Fred's rapping is terrible. Snoop's is good, though. At first I thought this was the worst LB song ever, but really, it does grow on you. 8/10

9. The Only One - The silly adolescent-love song. It has funny, immature lyrics like, "I ain't looking to screw until the vibe's right." It's good for a laugh and has a great guitar lick, but I hope they don't release it as a single. 4/10

10. Let Me Down - Another ballad, this time about a bad relationship and let-me-down-cause-everyone-else-does type of lyrics, but it also talks about the old days, before he became a rock star. Interesting story. 9/10

11. Lonely World - It's cool, but this song and "Let Me Down" are kind of the same thing. 7/10

12. Phenomenon - Finally! The album regains its confidence and picks up again with another rocker. No more ballads until the end. This is pretty much a straightforward rap/rock track. He mocks lyrics from Public Enemy. 9/10

13. Creamer (Radio is Dead) - Awesome song. Starts off as a fight song, then becomes a rap song about the people who hate him and how he doesn't care, and then the last set of lyrics has a reference to Kurt Cobain. 10/10

14. Head for the Barricade - Another hard-edged rocker! I wish they had had more of these at the beginning of the album instead of those ballads. This one had a GREAT chorus in which Fred yells, "Stick em! Stick em! Stick em, HAHAHA! Stick Em!" He sounds insane and angry, the way we like him. One of the best three songs. 10/10

15. Behind Blue Eyes - This is a great Who cover song! Very modern sounding and melodic. The only reason I don't give this a perfect score is because Fred took some lyrics out of the end, including my favorite lyric where Pete Townshend says, "If I should swallow anything evil, please stick your fingers down my throat." It would've been great if he had included those lyrics. Too bad. 9.7/10

16. Drown - This song pretty much epitomizes Nu-metal power ballads with lyrics like, "It's getting closer to the end/I look back and smile/we conquered every single bump in my road/made it all worth while/just remember how I cared, when it came crashing down." And the chorus, "Save me, save me, before I drown." 7/10

17. Let It Go - Hidden track, another one that shows their newfound maturity. A song about letting go of anger? From LIMP BIZKIT? No way! Oh, yes. It's good, too. It talks about running away from problems, friends betraying you, and in the end says, "what hurts so much/is that I believed you to be a true friend/but all along/you never cared." 9.5/10
