Free Music Notes for Broadway, My WayFree Music Review: A real surprise! Hit: 5 StarsSorry everyone, but had never heard of Linda Eder before finding "Broadway" in the classical music section of "Real One Player." It remains a favorite on ROP and also purchased the cd. The music and voice are great (others have said it better). Especially enjoyed hearing the music from "Man of La Mancha" having seen the musical many years ago, and with the recording buried behind the stacks of cd's. The title song "Anthem" from "Chess" is a defining opener.Reason for being on "Real One Player" that particular day was to search out any of G.F. Handel's music other than the great "Messiah" and "Fireworks." Old G.F. turned an interesting twist on opera creating the oratorio with great concerts of solo arias, supported by powerful orchestral and choral music for an English audience tiring of foreign opera (beginning in ealy 1730's). Without too much stretch we can come forward in time from one defining tradition to another, the very up to date Eder's "Broadway." Needless to say, on ROP, I found only Messrs. Beethoven and Mozart, but also Ms Eder, the latter making up for the total failure to find Mr H. Based on positive reviews "Storybook" appears another winner and we will also consider the Linda Eder holiday album.
Free Music Review: Essential Linda Eder CD Hit: 4 StarsLinda Eder, has decided that the next best thing to starring in all of her favorite Broadway plays, is skipping straight to singing and cover her favorite songs instead. This CD is wonderful, and Linda puts a new spin on a few old favorites, such as a jazzier, sultrier "On The Streets Where You Live" from "My Fair Lady." Its a shame that she hasn't achieved the same iconic success of less talented singers around her, such as Madonna and Britney Spears. Her voice has a unique power and tenderness that makes it hard not to fall in love with it. The one flaw about this album is that if you're not a big fan of certain Broadway plays, such as "Man of La Mancha" or "Gypsy," you might find yourself skipping over half of the thirteen tracks, because she has quite a few from both. Instead of picking thirteen different plays, Eder chose simply her favorites. I enjoyed almost all of them, but others may not.
Free Music Review: A return to form, bears up to repeated listening... Hit: 5 StarsI've been a Linda fan for years and have everything except her first release. I introduced my wife to Linda a year or so ago, and she bought this one last month. We both like it much better than "Gold", although that one does not stink either. Frankly, I was afraid Linda would "belt" these songs beyond my liking, but I think she restrained herself and went up to that line, but did not cross it. Comparisons to Streisand are inevitable, but Linda and Barbra are not clones. I like them both. I enjoy "Anthem" and "On the Street Where You Live" and "A New Life" the most, but each listener will have his/her own favorites. We paid full price, we don't regret it, we'll play it a lot and we're glad to have it. Perhaps next time out she'll find a dozen or so new and unfamiliar songs to interpret, but she did not waste her talent or my money on "Broadway My Way." It was time to do it, and she can have pride in the result. And if, like me, you find Linda's looks appealing, note that the front cover has a sexy, elegant pose in color, but the final black and white photo inside the booklet, the pensive and non-sexy pose, is dynamite. The beauty within AND on the outside are both revealed in that one.
Free Music Review: Linda Has Her Way! Hit: 5 StarsWhether she's gently caressing "I'll Be Seeing You" or belting out "Man of La Mancha," Linda's golden voice is seamless. Her voice has a warmth and range that few singers are blessed to possess. (And I'm saying this as a professional singer myself!) Her choices for the album are excellent - especially "Anthem" and "Unusual Way." These two pieces are not heard enough, and Linda's interpretations are above reproach. And I will never forget her performance of "Gold," the marvelous piece to which Kristia Yamaguchi skates so gracefully. This CD is a must-have!
Free Music Review: The attack of "can belto" Hit: 3 StarsLinda Eder is a very talented and promising singer...if you like Broadway belters.Personally, as a singer who performs in both operatic and Broadway styles, I can't stand it. Who is this woman's teacher? Do voice teachers not instruct their pupils in legitimate vocal techniques anymore? Why is good old (and technically correct) bel canto style being replaced with "can belto"! If Ms. Eder wants to see what the best voices on Broadway are, she should go see any production of "West Side Story" or "Phantom of the Opera," which have not been yet tainted by the likes of people like Ms. Eder or the god-awful Liza Minnelli. I don't care if these people are legends. I don't care if I'm insulting Barbara Streisand, who sang much of the repertoire on this CD. These famous singers just don't sing correctly anymore. Nevertheless, if you can get past the belting, Ms. Eder does have many things to recommend her. Her voice is very dramatic and powerful, and she has amazing control and range. I commend her song choices, even though they have been done by many famous singers, because she knows what flatters her range and voice and doesn't try to sing what's unsuitable for her at this point in her career. However, I can't help thinking about how amazing Ms. Eder would be if she actually decided to learn how to sing legitimately.
