Free Music Review: The Beginning of Something Wonderful

Linda Eder began her recording career with this album. I will admit, at this point, it didn't look like she knew what she wanted to do with her voice. She seemed to want people to think she was some kind of punk rocker, judging from the insert photos of her with teased hair and black leather jackets. And some of the tunes on this album ("Every Little Thing," "Love is Forever") are quite contemporary sounding, with somewhat suggestive lyrics. While these songs weren't exactly indicative of what was to come, they were still good, and you would still think, "Geez, this woman can sing." But the shining stars on this album are those in which Eder gives her voice a workout, particularly in the hopeful "Before I Fall," the beautiful "After All," the exquisite "Someone Like You," (which incidentally was only the rough draft for the Jekyll and Hyde version of "Someone Like You") and the indescribable "Vienna." The last two songs have become sort of trademarks for Eder, "Someone Like You," with it's soaring choruses, reaching ever higher and culminating in that chill-producing, "feel so a-li-i-i-ve!"; and "Vienna," with it's heartbreaking lyric, delicious melody, and wonderful high notes (peformed flawlessly by Eder). All of these things come together to give any critic looking to carp on a new singer a run for his money. Even though this was a modest effort compared to what came later (including even better recordings of "Someone Like You" and "Vienna") anyone would know that Linda Eder could sing. And there was, and still is, no carping that could be done. This punk-ified "rocker," would soon become a sleek, elegant beauty performing dramatic Broadway ballads, but this album still is well-worth it's cost and then some. It just doesn't get any better than Eder. (Hey, I made a rhyme!)
