Free Music Notes for 'Round MidnightFree Music Review: Rondstadt Reigns 'Round Midnight' Hit: 4 StarsRarely does a pop singer get afforded the opportunity to realize their potential, for the record, the way Linda Rondstadt does in her collaborations with Nelson Riddle. Smooth, haunting and thoroughly memorable are vocals in this Linda Rondstadt collection. There is no reason to try to choose a favorite from this collection of timeless standards, just let this flood of nostalgia loose and listen as waves of wonderful music wash over you.
Free Music Review: Misses The Mark Hit: 2 StarsI enjoy the music but Linda's voice does not cut it singing these types of songs. These were torch songs, she sings them like an opera singer. I enjoy the CD as back ground music, but please don't compare these tracks to Ella, Sinatra and the rest.
Nice CD...but not up to the standards by a long shot. But I give her credit for trying.
Free Music Review: Pefection of the Standard Hit: 5 StarsToday I was in the mood for the Standards, so I took out my copy of "'Round Midnight", and though I like many versions of these great songs by many artists, this double ( Really the music of three CD's "What's New", "Lush Life" and "Sentimental Reasons") CD finds Linda Ronstadt at her absolute best for this genre. There is not a flawed note or phrase in the entire CD set. "'Round MIdnight" is lush, beautiful in orchestration, and arrangements, and the voice that does these songs with the most beautiful interpretations available.
So here's the deal,
If you are a fan of the "Standards" like me, you will find nothing but perfection on this Double CD.
Free Music Review: Lindas' vocals shine in this must have collection of standards! Hit: 4 StarsIf there is one thing that jumps out at me when I am listening to the tracks on this two CD,32 track collection,is Rondstadts' vocals. One might be tempted to say "who knew?".After all her claim to fame previous to this was in the rock n roll genre, but if you listened closely to her then you can see that there was much more vocally in reserve in such songs as "Ohh,baby, baby" and "Blue Bayou".That reserve comes out in spades in this collection and shows what a talent Linda is.
These are some of the best that the proverbial American Songbook has to offer, songs like:"You go to my Head","Skylark","Am I Blue" and her big hit made famous originally by Bob Crosby and the Bobcats,"What's New?".All done beautifully.
The only drawback I can hear are the arrangements.First they aren't consistent enough throughout to sustain the power of,a say,"What's New?".Secondly, there are some tunes that have beginnings that just don't match up musically with the rest of the song. For example "Falling in Love Again" starts out with Linda singing along with a music-box like backing before going into a light upbeat version of it.It's a combo that,to me,doesn't quite do justice to the song or Lindas' vocals.Or third, others like "My Funny Valentine" that are just "odd" and totally weak throughout.
But thankfully they are the exceptions more than the rule,I DO like this compilation of the three albums she did in this vein and it certainly deserves a wide audience.Linda's versions and vocal abilities certainly far outpace by light years those done by more recent interpretors such as Rod Stewart. And one also might say she was a bit ahead of her time in that respect also.
Who can forget Linda originally appearing on TV shows promoting these songs in her lavish period dress backed by the orchestra? It sure caught my attention and I'm also sure it drew new fans into re-discovering/introducing the great songs that she was singing. And if nothing else, her endeavours were well worth it.
A CD well worth getting.A great package:beautiful vocals, generally pleasing Riddle arrangements and some of the best songs ever written.Who could ask for anything more?
Free Music Review: round midnight Hit: 5 StarsOddest thing about the album; the song titles do not match the #s on the list.
But love the album.
