Free Music Notes for Canciones de Mi PadreFree Music Review: Inspired music from inspiring artist! Hit: 5 StarsThough Linda Ronstadt's singing career has led me through an exhaustive exploration of many different styles of music, I never tire of growing along with her. This album and its follow-up, Mas Canciones, are cultural masterpieces and an homage to Linda's own Mexican heritage.
The songs are alternately sad and joyful, heart-rending and exuberant. When my kids were younger and we'd pack them 3-across in the backseat of our little Toyota, where they'd scream at each other and jockey for space, I would put on one of the two Canciones cassettes and Linda's music would never fail to bring them in line and have us all singing "Toro, toro, toro-o-o-o-!" or one of the other great ranchera songs that Linda introduced to us.
There has never been anyone in popular music who has so enriched our culture as Linda Ronstadt has. From early rock and folk rock to country-rock and pure C&W, from Gilbert & Sullivan to Puccini, from Nelson Riddle pop standards to lullabies and kids'-movie theme songs, and from Guadalajara to Havana and back, Linda seems to have no fear of blazing new trails for the modern American senses. How boring these past 35 years of popular music would have been without her!
I don't think Linda Ronstadt has ever received the recognition she deserves for just pure musical courage and an absolutely priceless taste in genres and styles. Buy Canciones de Mi Padre now, and grab a copy of Mas Canciones while you're at it!
Free Music Review: Amazing, and Hit: 5 StarsAs a fan of Linda's country-rock music, I bought this CD for my Mexican girlfriend--a woman steeped in ranchera--on a whim. She could not stop listening to the recording. I have since then encountered several other Mexican fans of ranchera who cherish this recording. I have subsequently bought "Mas Canciones," which features a far more assured voice and emotionally involving song selection, and includes the masterpiece "Tata Dios," for my girlfriend, for myself, and for our due-to-arrive baby. I have moreover ordered the video, which will, God willing, arrive in Mexico some time within the next year. While I will happily admit that there are instances of famale ranchera singing that can easily contend with Linda's--Durcal's "Costumbres" or del Rio's "Hijo de Nadie," for example--this CD is, unlike the vast majority of ranchera recordings, excellent from start to finish, and the follow-up CD, "Mas Canciones," is among or is indeed the best album-length recording of female ranchera singing available. I recommend this CD, but if you have enough money for just one, buy "Mas Canciones."
Free Music Review: The True Spirit of Mexican Music Hit: 5 StarsEven though Linda Ronstadt is not bilingual, you'd never know it from this album. She truly has inherited the spirit of Mexican music from her father. I prefer her version of "Por un amor" to Lucha Reyes' and that's saying a lot! She has the passionate intensity of Lola Beltran, but with her own unique style. And she has the voice to carry off the huapangos. Her rendition of "Rogaciano" is gorgeous. I love this CD! Muchisimas gracias, Linda.
