Free Music Review: One of many shining moments...
Hit: 5 Stars

I couldn't agree more with the reviews here. I thought I was crazy for spending so much on one CD, but I guess I'm not alone! Spending $30 for one CD may seem strange to others, but "Don't Cry Now" is one of Linda Ronstadt's finest albums, and it is perhaps my favourite of her albums. It's worth every penny, especially now that is has been remastered.

Indeed, the album is mostly ballads, but Ronstadt's biggest strength as an artist, besides her vocal ability, is her choice of material; it's impeccable. My three favourite tracks on the album are generally associated with other artists: "Silver Threads and Golden Needles" (Dusty Springfield), "Desperado" (The Eagles) and "Love Has No Pride" (Bonnie Raitt). As much as I like those artists and their versions of these songs, nobody does them better than Linda. To me, they are the definitive versions. Particularly "Desperado", perhaps one of the most-covered songs in music history. Linda's version is powerful in its simplicity, and her vocals are both pristine and pack an emotional wallop.

The remastering on this CD is superb, particularly since many of Linda's '70s recordings on CD need to be remastered for today's listeners.

Free Music Review: If they had 6 stars this one would get it..
Hit: 5 Stars

Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette, Grace Slick, Aretha Franklin, Ann Wilson and Linda Ronstadt. Yeah, their's others but this is the best of the best and Linda is on the board of directors.. Female vocalists with voices that, with rare exception you dont hear much of in todays music. Its all Diva's and digital now. BUT if its digital then Mobile Fidelity did one fine fine job on Dont Cry Now. God it sounds beautiful. I am so glad MOFI came back..I have a huge MOFI collection and this is one of the best. MOFI had some great material and excellent 70's era technical groundwork already at hand before they began their own mastery. This is Linda when she was really beginning to hit stride. The voice was settled down and her music was taking on that signature smooth-as-silk sound. No matter what Linda sings, its always perfect. Even today her voice is exactly like it was 30 years ago. I've caught some flack for this opinion but I've always thought that Linda was Roy Orbison's counter. It hits you the same way. The emotion and drive that comes out of her is virtually unequaled. Another fun fact is Lindas 70's era album covers. One smokin hot lady. You couldn't wait to see the next one..right boys? Yes its a guy deal but fellas you know what I'm talking about..Every Ronstadt album cover gave you a clue as to what was inside for your musical enjoyment. Dont Cry Now is an example of yet again, a top end musician who surrounds herself with nothing but the best. From writers to engineers. J.D. Souther and Peter Asher teamed up on this recording to produce a masterpiece, and. Linda's voice will hypnotize you. I promise.

Free Music Review: Terrific remaster worth the extra $$ for Ronstadt fans.
Hit: 4 Stars

Wow. A transitional album for Linda Ronstadt in sound only, "Don't Cry Now" has more of a country-rock sound than later albums. Her first recording for Asylum, "Don't Cry Now" gets the deluxe reissue that it always deserved. Although it doesn't have bonus tracks, the sound is truly stunning on this Ultradisc II release from Mofi. This blows away every version of the album I've heard with rich detail and a nice warm sound. The recording doesn't sound compressed or like it has been brickwalled pumping out volume at the expense of the dynamic range of the original recording.

Shawn Brittan does a marvelous job remastering this classic album. The album is a limited, numbered edition and is presented in a replica of its original gatefold sleeve (as with The Allman Brothers "Idlewind South" Mofi reissue). Like Steve Hoffman's excellent remaster of her Greatest Hits collection, "Don't Cry Now" has all of the advantages of CD without the disadvantages of most modern remasters.

Free Music Review: My favorite Country Album etc.etc etc.
Hit: 5 Stars

Recently in our local paper, was an article from two writers in Texas who made a list of the 100 best country songs of all time. For my part the fact that there was nothing from this great album was proof enough that the two reporters were, to say the least, under informed.

As a hard core Rock and Roll teen-ager, this was an album that my parents and I could agree to at dinner time back in the 70's, and for me at least, every song is just as fresh today as it was back in high school.

Every year, when American Idol has country week, I hope to hear some contestant try one of these classics, but alas, I am always disappointed.

The performance here of Silver Threads and Golden Needles, to me, has to be top 5 country all time, but that's just me. "Sail Away", "Colorado",the heart wrenching "Love Has No Pride" and of course "Desperado" are some of the best recordings from a lady (whom despite being severely politically opposite from me) that I feel is the best vocalist of all music genres, I mean think about it, she has done Country, Rock, Pop, Swing, Light Opera and Spanish music, and now Cajun? And still this remains my favorite from her way over 30 years later. Remastering is a bonus, but she sounded good on my cheap stereo when I was a kid.

Free Music Review: GROUNDBREAKING PRESTARDOM RECORDING
Hit: 5 Stars

Linda had a difficult time during her long tenure at Capitol Records. Her recordings went over budget and broke even leaving her to tour constantly. She became a cult favorite long before stardom claimed her. This first recording (of many) for WEA was the first step on the ladder to fame. It has been in print on CD for years. DESPERADO and LOVE HAS NO PRIDE done by others have become signature Ronstadt piecees. She creates the definitive version of SILVER THREADS AND GOLDEN NEEDLES and there is the unheralded classic I BELIEVE IN YOU. With 3 producers at work, including her soon to be star making manager/producer PETER ASHER, this has always been a must have for Linda fans. Some will complain that the majority of songs are ballads--there are only two uptempo numbers. But listen more than once and you will be hooked--I promise you! And now Mobile Fidelity (known for their audiophile vinyl) has released the best sounding Ronstadt recording to date on a gold Ultradisc II in a limited numbered edition housed in a gatefold cardboard digipak with a protective cloth inner sleeve.

It's pricey but well worth the trip down memory lane. Her powerful emotion-laden voice is one of a kind and another argument as to why didn't woman make it big years before? Well--she did with her subsequent release HEART LIKE A WHEEL setting the music world on fire and stacking up more back to back platinum Lps than any recording artist with sales of over 83 million.

Worth the price. An old classic has come to life thanks to Mobile Fidelity. It is a shame all the 70's Ronstadt releases on CD were never remastered again. The originals are muddy and too compacted. Perhaps we will see more of this on Mobile Fidelity or remastered with 24 bit technology. She is worth the price and is to this day one of premier song stylists of all time.
