Any brand-new album by Linda Ronstadt is highly anticipated. You tend to buy it the moment it comes out. That's exactly what I did when "We Ran" came out in 1998. Last week, I played it again. While Linda's voice holds up, the material is slow, draggy, dull, and plodding -- extremely uninspired work -- actually depressing. The artwork is dull. She uses her usual art designers -- Kosh -- to decorate the CD booklet, but even they appear to be out of ideas. The typesetting of the words in the insert looks cheap. All you see of Linda are her eyeballs in reverse images throughout. I can't think of one highlight on the record, except that she has her family singing on the last song, "Dreams of the San Joaquin," with their wonderful harmonies. But even "San Joaquin" is a mundane tune. "Give Me a Reason" had possibilities, but it sounds as if all of the singers are tired and weary, and out of breath. I want Linda to rock! The actual title of this recording should have been, "We Ran Out of Steam," (similar to another reviewer's comments). This album is for the folksy-bluesy, easy-listening audience who are also absolute die-hard Linda Ronstadt fans. (I wonder what made her record company think that this was even commercial?) I recommend Linda's CD, "Hasten Down the Wind," to anyone, if you want to hear what makes Linda outstanding. I'm giving this CD ("We Ran") away, as I don't count it as part of my CD library. Takes up space.

Thirty albums into her career, not much uncharted territory remains for Linda Ronstadt, who has shown herself willing, if not always able, to work in any genre. We Ran is a lush but earthy reexamination of material by Bruce Springsteen, John Hiatt, and Doc Pomus. If matching her with Dylan's "Tom Thumb's Blues" sounds like an exercise in futility, Waddy Wachtel's tremolo guitar, the Booker T.-like soulfulness of the band, and Ronstadt's sweetly weary voice suggest otherwise. Primary producer Glyn Johns (the Rolling Stones, the Who) makes smart choices--though George Massenburg and Wachtel turn "I Go to Pieces" into a breath-fest--and the musicianship of Bernie Leadon and the Heartbreakers keeps pace with Ronstadt's serene vocal ease. --Roy KastenCountry Music CDs
