Free Music Review: Lindsay Continues to Entertain
Hit: 5 Stars

Many of my friends tell me I have bad taste in music, which may be true, but I don't really care. Instead of their punk, emo, or rap genre's that are becoming increasingly popular today, I continue to like the old pop/rock music that was extremely popular in the 90's. I don't really see this as a crime, but many would be quick to disagree because opinions in music truly matter significantly in one's life. Clearly. Many people reviewed this album for the sake of promoting other artists, and all I have to say is that most people interested in a Lindsay Lohan cd, no matter how hard you may try, will not like artists such as Pink Floyd. No one questions their music, it simply is not of interest.

That being said, I am a huge fan of pop music, so fittingly I love a CD like this. I have to admit, however, that I was extremely reluctant to buying this, for I thought it would be the same junk that has one good single and the rest is crap. Such is not the case with Speak. I loved Rumors, and after hearing Over once on the radio I decided to actually consider purchasing this. I am glad to say that I did.

The album kicks off with a bang with the aptly titled First. Right away I knew this album was going to have a rock edge, which I was glad since I like pop with some hints of rock. Her voice is actually quite strong on this song as well. I honestly expected her to suck on most of her songs. Again, I'm glad she doesn't.

Nobody Til You continues with the same style and glides along nicely with a beat that's hard not to move to. A true fun pop song. Symptoms of You begins with a piano and then begins to pick up with some cheesy lyrics but good vocals. Now anyone who buys or reviews this album based on it's lyrical content is one that shouldn't be reviewing it. I speak for myself and some other pop music fans when I say that lyrics don't matter that much. Melodies are key.

Then we move into Speak, which upon my first listen I understood why the album took the name of this song. It has so much attitude; a real dark, sexy feel to it, similar to the feel of Rumors only a bit more grimy. Love it. Over is next, another nice guitar-ridden song with again much stronger vocals than I believed Lindsay was capable of (granted she does have background singers galor).

Continuing with the rock-tinged themes, Something I Never Had has one of the best melodies of the album. At first, I forgot about this song and didn't deem it memorable. I was wrong. Now it remains one of my top two favorite songs. Another great thing about Lindsay is her vocals are convincing (perhaps it's the acting skills?). Anything But Me is catchy, but not one of the best on this CD. It's lyrics seem redundent, which they really must be for me to say it, but they twist around in weird ways and make it difficult to understand what she's trying to say. Still ok nontheless.

Disconnected starts out rather tame, but then explodes at the chorus. I can't really describe it though, it's kind of Michelle Branch-ish at the beginning, but the chorus perhaps a bit more like Avril? Either way it's a great song.

The next song, To Know Your Name, continues where Speak left off, with a techno-ish, club ready beat that drives through the song. Her voice sounds similar to Britney's in this one--in a good way. It really fits the style well and it proves that Lohan is able to acclimate to the different types of music that producers give her. Versitality is never a bad thing.

Very Last Moment in Time has the biggest turn off of a title ever. I thought it was gonna be terrible, but it is tied for my favorite song on the album. It has a great message and her vocals again are amazing. Normally, that would be a terrific end to the album, but she has one more trick up her sleeves with Rumors. Club-ready and beat throbbing, this song has lots of attitude and is actually much different from the rest of the album. A good closer to a great album.

To reiterate, Lindsay CAN sing and also knows how to make a great album, regardless of the number of writers and producers who helped her along the way. If you like pop music than you will like this for sure. I personally like it better than anything Hilary Duff or Ashlee Simpson have put out because, though stylistically similar, Lohan has the voice that is able to keep up with loud music in the background, although I personally don't really like Duff's acting or singing. For some reason though, Lindsay has won me over. If pop music isn't what you like, then simply don't buy it, for if you like what people call "real music" (though I question how music can not actually be real) then you obviously won't like it and shouldn't waste your precious time reviewing an album so people won't buy it, even though they probably will. She may not be a brilliant lyricist or an outstanding guitarist, but she fulfills the role of a great entertainer who has found yet another talent that she can add to her resume.

Speak Poster

LOHAN LINDSAY SPEAK
Lindsay Lohan leaps into her much anticipated debut CD with a blast of something that simulates warmed-over Led Zeppelin (the lyrically ferocious "First") and from there finesses it into a stylish experiment in pounding away at teen pop's predictability. Influences--not all of whom her 8-to-14-year-old fans will flip to, or even find, in their pinup mags--loom large: While the Ashlee Simpson-like rocker "Nobody 'Til You" winds into the Jessica Simpson-y "Symptoms of You," the lovelorn "Something I Never Had," taps a sweetly unself-conscious vocal vein that owes gratitude to the otherwise highly un-Lohan-like Lisa Loeb. Though Lohan might balk at the comparison--she is, after all, the "Ultimate"-spawning original teenage drama queen--fellow tween queen Hilary Duff's stamp is pressed firmly into stormy self-explorers like "Disconnected" and "Anything But Me." Where "Speak" intones loudest, though, is in its least-rocking, most beat-propelled songs: The title track dips and bounces tantalizingly, begging hands-in-the-air listeners to "c'mon and let it out"; "To Know Your Name" digitizes a sexy hip-hop inflected dance number; and "Rumors," a J. Lo-like thumper (and one in a trifecta of pouts over the pitfalls of stardom) ends this disc on a don't-stop, bound-for-diva-dom note. -Tammy La Gorce
