Free Music Notes for Gift Of ScrewsFree Music Review: What a gift this is!! Hit: 4 Stars
Last year Lindsey released his "Under My Skin" album, an album that was pretty much just him and his guitar. I hated that album. Now comes "Gift Of Screws", an album of the same name was supposed to have come out back around 1996 or so. The songs from those sessions got split up and became Fleetwood Mac's "Say You Will", last years "Under The Skin" and now "Gift Of Screws". Lindsey has returned to form here, his solo stuff has always been a little harder to swallow (read; less commercial) than his work with Fleetwood Mac, but there is a lot to like on "Gift".
Once again Lindsey is playing most of the instruments himself, however he is joined by fellow Mac members, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie on a couple of tracks.
The best tracks for me are "Did You Miss Me", "Love Runs Deeper" (which sounds like it could very well be about his ex-lover Stevie Nicks), "Gift Of Screws" and my personal favorite "The Right Place To Fade".
There is nothing on here that sounds like his past masterpieces, "Go Your Own Way" or "I'm So Afraid", but Lindsey has shown that he can still write a great hook and play the heck out of the guitar.
Free Music Review: Buckingham comes out shining in Screws Hit: 4 Stars
A follow up to his 2006 album "Under The Skin," which to me far excedes it. He takes on more of his rock roots and a few of the songs sound very much like something that could be on a Fleetwood Mac album. "Great Day" has "Tusk" written all over it. "Love Runs Deeper" has this awesome chorus with that Mac-ish tone. "Did You Miss Me" is just lyrics in motion and is definitely one of my favorites. "Wait For You" is sinister and balls to the wall rockin'. "Treason" takes us back to the acoustic feel of "Skin" with its strumming acoustics and lush Buckingham vocals. I love this album and will say it is the closest to "Cradle' in my heart.
Free Music Review: Many Peaks -- only 1 Valley Hit: 4 Stars
Lindsey Buckingham's track record on solo albums has been one of nearly equal peaks and valleys -- for each outstanding track there has been a dud. "Gift Of Screws" breaks that model and represents Buckingham's best solo release. Ironically, the title track is the only low point on the disc. The other nine tracks are all very strong. I don't know what tracks, if any, are getting air play, but the track "Did You Miss Me" is custom-made for radio. At just under 39 minutes for the CD, the only other criticism is one of wishing that Lindsey would have stretched out some of the tracks a bit longer.
Free Music Review: Gift of Screws is a relief Hit: 4 Stars
Under The Skin was an introduction to this album.I find all his albums to be amuzing with a dark bite.I mean really with a line like this..A Tarantula passes by the window no one takes it as a sign/no one cares which way the wind blows someone's got to change your mind. From the opening track Great Day untill Treason is a wonderfull experience. He recorded this in his home and hotel rooms.....That's Lindsey for ya!
Free Music Review: He gets better Hit: 4 Stars
There is life after Fleetwood Mac. Lindsey Buckingham just gets better with every solo album. While most of the other core Fleetwood Mac members (later days) struggles to stay relevant, Lindsey is a testament of how you could nick a Mac and still sounds great.
