Free Music Notes for Hybrid TheoryFree Music Review: A Must Have For All Linkin Park Fans Hit: 5 Stars
When I was growing up, I mostly listened to hip hop music and never really gave rock a try. When I first heard of Linkin Park, I didn't really like them that much. I was like most people that I know today that still don't like Linkin Park. At the place where I used to work, one of my co-workers called them a "boy band with guitars." And admittedly, that's what I had originally percieved Linkin Park as. Mainly because I heard songs like "Crawling" and "In The End" and thought of them as songs "more geared towards teen girls."
After a while, I started getting into a few bands like Limp Bizkit. But after listening to constant yelling about a girl that Fred Durst got screwed over by (which happened like years ago) and songs that had little to no meaning whatsoever (Rollin') I had a desire to seek out a rock band that not only satisfied my hip hop needs, but also brought in some emotion and feeling to their music.
Then, my friend came over to my house with Hybrid Theory in his hands. At first I didn't really care, but then he started playing the CD and all of a sudden, something very unexpected happened. I started liking Linkin Park! I tried to pretend like I didn't like the music, but that CD was everything that I had been looking for the past few years. Not only did it have a good deal of rap in it, but the lyrics were filled with feeling and emotion. I started to realize that songs like "Crawling" weren't just written for teenie bopper girls suffering from depression. A lot of the emotions and feelings of that song, among other songs on the album, described the feelings that I had inside of myself.
Then one day, I came across an import of Hybrid Theory at the local music store. It included two bonus tracks not found on the CD that my friend had. It costed a lot, but there weren't any regular versions of the CD so I figured, might as well get it so I can have something to wave in my friend's face. After getting home, I listened to the entire CD and was extremely surprised by how awesome it was. Here's my thoughts on all the tracks:
Papercut - The first song on the CD, it gives a good impression of what to expect from the rest of the CD. Some hard-hitting guitar combined with some great rhymes from Mike. (5 out of 5)
One Step Closer - The one song that I liked even when I didn't like Linkin Park, and one of my favorites to this day. Great singing and screaming from Chester. A classic. (5 out of 5)
With You - A great example of Mr. Hahn's mad DJ skills, combined with killer lyrics from both Mike and Chester. The great mix of scratching and guitar is especially awesome on this track. (5 out of 5)
Points Of Authority - Another classic heavy rock song. Nice lyrics, especially from Chester. I love the cool effects at the end of the song. (5 out of 5)
Crawling - The classics keep on coming. Didn't really like it back when I first heard it, but now it's one of my faves. Really deep lyrics in this song. (5 out of 5)
Runaway - Another song with some nice DJ work combined with more hard guitar and nice lyrics from Chester. (5 out of 5)
By Myself - Not exactly one of my favorite LP songs, but it does feature some great lyrics from Mike. (4 out of 5)
In The End - Yet another classic song. Really thoughtful rapping from Mike who busts out with some classic rhymes. Chester really pours out on this song too. (5 out of 5)
A Place For My Head - Great rap lyrics from Mike on this song. A little more complex guitar than in some of the other songs. Great song to rock out to. (5 out of 5)
Forgotten - Another one of those songs that's okay but not exactly a favorite. It's still good though. (4 out of 5)
Cure For The Itch - The one stand-out song on the album. A DJ track by Mr. Hahn, and one of my favorite tracks on the album. Some rock fans might not like it, but if you like scratching this track is tight. (5 out of 5)
Pushing Me Away - The CD finishes off with this song, with more great lyrics and guitar. A great song to close the album with. (5 out of 5)
For those who have either the special edition CD or the Japanese import, there's two bonus tracks included. These do not appear on the regular version of the CD.
My December - The whole song is pretty much piano, with no rock whatsoever. Probably why it didn't make the original CD. It's an okay song, but not exactly on the top of my favorite LP song list. (3 out of 5)
High Voltage - A new version of an old song from the Hybrid Theory EP CD. Some of Mike's best lyrics is on this song, although unfortunately it's censored (the S word, which he only says twice). But still an awesome hip hop song. (5 out of 5)
So anyway, you can get either the regular version of Hybrid Theory or the one with the two extra songs (the special edition also comes with some live songs too, but I haven't heard them so I didn't rate them). I recommend the one with the bonus tracks though, they're pretty tight. And it probably won't cost you too much more.
So to end my review, if you're a fan of Linkin Park chances are you already own Hybrid Theory. If you don't, then you should hit yourself in the head a bunch of times. Then get this CD.
I highly recommend people to give this CD a try. You might just like it. Don't let that "boy band with guitars" stuff get in your head, because if you give them a chance you'll see that their music is geared towards all kinds of people, not just girls. It's a blend of all kinds of musical styles, so even people who don't like rock music can probably get into it. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.
Hybrid Theory PosterSpecial import edition of the alternative metal act's 2000 debut album with 5 bonus tracks added 'Papercut', 'Points of Authority' (live), 'A Place For My Head' (live), 'My December' & 'High Voltage'. Housed in a slipcase. 2002. It may be too cynical to assume Hybrid Theory changed its name to Linkin Park in order to appear right next to Limp Bizkit in your local record bin. But rock-rap workouts like "One Step Closer" and "Papercut" do make Linkin Park a comfortable fit with Fred Durst and his ilk. Producer Don Gilmore (Pearl Jam, Lit, Eve 6) and twin vocal threats Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda serve up industrial-strength rap and rock melodicism with equal aplomb on this woulda-been-self-titled debut effort. "Points of Authority" aims to sound like Trent Reznor wanking it up with Lars and company, whereas guitarist Brad Delson's Edge-y harmonics help "In the End" and "Pushing Me Away" evoke a dark romanticism akin to A Perfect Circle. Curiously, the band gets by with no bass player, while sample-happy DJ Joseph Hahn's step into the spotlight on the instrumental "Cure for the Itch" suggests a potential for eclecticism that could help Linkin Park outlive its seemingly transient genre. --Bill Forman
